He could have been the hero his many diehard fans still insist he is. It's sad, but the biggest tragedy is not Joe Paterno's and Penn State football's legacy being forever tarnished. It's the dozens of boys whose lives were damaged when adults knew and did nothing.

Friend mentioned something similar tonight. He asked: "What would have happened if Joe Pa just picked up the phone and called the police? Big local story, but little lasting national attention. Now, it’s his legacy."
