Some basketball injury updates as UC (4-2) prepares to play at Georgia (4-3) on Friday night:
– Junior guard JaQuon Parker
(tear in right groin) probably will not be ready to play Friday, coach Mick Cronin said today. Parker was to be evaluated again today.
“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he can start practicing, if not Thursday, then when we get back from Georgia,” Cronin said. “He’s feeling better. Next week will be four weeks, and it’s a four-to-five week injury.”
The plan is for Parker to gradually work his way back into game shape.
”The sooner he starts his buildup, the faster he’s going to get to where he can actually play,” Cronin said.
– Freshman forward Octavius Ellis
(slight fracture in right hand) also remains out.
“They think it will be two-to-four weeks,” Cronin said. “Tomorrow will be a week.”
When asked whether Ellis might be a redshirt candidate, Cronin replied:
“We haven’t discussed that.”
Cronin said the 6-9 Ellis might have played some key minutes had he been healthy for Tuesday’s Miami game, which UC won 56-47.
“A lot of teams that decide to try to spread you out … he’s our best perimeter-defending big guy because he can move his feet,” Cronin said. “He has good lateral quickness, and he knows how to stay away and use his length.”
