Stanford Defeats Arizona 16-6 In Homecoming Game
The Stanford Cardinal travel to Los Angeleles to take on UCLA on October 26th.

Stanford, Calif. - Michael Sgroi kicked three field goals, and Chris Lewis threw 12 yards to Alex Smith for the game's only touchdown as Stanford defeated Arizona 16-6 Saturday.
The Cardinal (2-4, 1-2 Pac-10) took the lead for good in the first quarter when Sgroi kicked a 45-yard field goal.
Jason Johnson passed for 244 yards to lead Arizona (3-4, 0-3), but he threw three interceptions and was sacked six times.
After Sgroi's field goal, Arizona began moving up the field, until Stanley Wilson intercepted one of Johnson's passes and ran 35 yards to the Wildcats 17-yard line.
On the second play of possession, Lewis fired to ball to Smith, who pulled the ball down from over his head and fell backward into the end zone for a 9-0 lead. Smith finished the game with career-highs of eight catches and 120 yards.
Arizona's Bobby Wade was the single biggest threat to Stanford, catching eight passes for 121 yards. He also returning two kickoffs for 58 yards and brought a punt back 64 yards.
The Wildcats' only scores came on two field goals by Bobby Gill, from 25 and 23 yards. Arizona didn't score in the second half.
Lewis was replaced by quarterback Kyle Matter, who led the Cardinal down the field to the Arizona 7, but Matter's pass was picked off in the end zone by Lance Briggs early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson drove the Wildcats to the Stanford 35, but his pass was intercepted at the 13 by Oshiomogho Atogwe. Matter then led Stanford to the Arizona 4 yard line, and the Cardinal settled for a 21-yarder by Sgroi.
Kerry Carter led Stanford's ground game with 98 yards on 27 carries. In the third quarter, he carried for six consecutive plays to get into Wildcat territory.
The drive led the Cardinal to the 8-yard line, and the Cardinal used a 27-yard field goal from Sgroi to go ahead 13-6.
