Here is TMD's rankings for each FB coach and his job security. One thing that I hadn't thought of, there are a lot of pretty secure jobs in the MAC this year. With that said, is Doug Martin in the worst position in the conference?

Yes, I would guess the leash is short. With the investment and focus that the new AD is putting on football, results will be necessary very quickly.

If results were the determining factor, Doug Martin should have been fired long ago. Contracts, and the departure of Laing Kennedy, both played a major role in him being retained. He has been here long enough to where we should be seeing significant results in the Win-Loss column. I hope we have a great season and he keeps his job. Anything less than a winning season, and I couldn't reasonably argue against sending him packing.

What sucks about that article is that my 2 most hated team's coaches are the 2 safest in the confrence. But I do agree that this year's team needs to get in a bowl. We won 5 games last year -well, maybe 4.5- and Martin has had a bowl eligible team here in the past. Under old expectations, I would say that he only needs to win 6. But I think Neilsen wants more national exposure for the school, which we do deserve.

The difference now is that we have an AD that knows something about FB on the field. That is an assumption on my part and we must wait and see. In the past, I have tried not to look at the W-L record first, but evaluate at what I see on the field. I have seen every excuse in the book used for the losses. All teams have to deal with misfortune. I have lately, chalked the schemes and basic lack of execution to having a coach who is learning on the job. I hope that the learning has worked and now we have a coach who knows how to win. I am tired of seeing average to good players looking as if they are not being taught and being held accountable. I am pulling for Martin very hard because of his apparent character and if the team performs, he will be a good coach for us to try to keep. But, there is little doubt, that if Neilsen knows the game as I suspect, and if he were here 3-4 years ago, Martin would not be our coach this year.

Agree 100%! I can add that your assumption that Nielsen knows something about football is not an assumption but a fact. He was at Wake Forrest when they turned that around as was his newly hired football Zcar (sic?). As a team, these two have put together a 4 year plan to significantly upgrade the entire football program. Getting additional $$ is a huge part of that plan. They are facing this 500lb Gorilla head on & you have to feel good about that. Turning the football program around is all you hear from Nielsen when you meet him.
As for Martin, if the team doesn't go at least 7-5, he will absolutely not be back next season! I like Martin a lot (as a man) and I really think this team will win at least 7 games this season.
