AD Ken Kavanagh will make a decision in a week or so, apparently. Kavanagh didn't hire Dave Balza and his quotes, while non-committal, aren't exactly a vote of confidence. FGCU has just one more season of re-classification left to go.

What's the situation here?

Decision now today or next week. . .

As an outsider, I think Balza is an adequate coach and with more resources and a couple years of recruiting HS kids instead of transfers which apparently left the cabinet bare after the first couple years at the DI level.

However, if he is done. . .the rumor up north is Steve Merfeld would be the probable new coach.

Merfeld was coach at Hampton when they upset Iowa State in the NCAA and later coached at Evansville, and most recently was fired as assistant coach at Bradley early this season.

Merfeld has connections with Kavanagh dating back to when they were both at Bowling Green in the early 1990's.
