RE: Construction around UAB campus
OK... This thread is as good a time as any for the big reveal....

BlazingGoat is back matriculating at his Alma Mater!

There... I said it.

Without going into too much detail your Goat is now a grad student working on his Masters. 03-shhhh

I just started after some 15 years out of school! OMGWTFBBQ!

The long and short of it is that yours truly is having to now hump (thanks to a poor parking situation, failure of his own to pony up the extra bucks for parking under the Education Building as befitting a grad student (cheap, old, bastard!!!), and due to the major surgery being done on campus) the following distance each T/Th morning:

Park in the fractured lot between the hotel/west campus field and the Engineering/Business Building. Walk through same building across behind the old honors building (it still honors?; you know? the Church.) to Humanities, then across the strasse through the education building, across the next strasse and then down to the new Heritage Hall where my undergrad prereqs are.

The ballfield (is it one or two now? Baseball and softball too? I can't tell. It's such a mess.) is tore up from the floor up, the parking outside that and Engineering is tore up, the library is tore up, and the old Blazer Cafe in Hill Center is a madhouse at lunch (too small)*.

The Good: Starbucks!!

Anyone who has a problem with the new Starbucks in our library can suck it! It's like a bar--the only thing keeping me sane...

I'm with DB. Couldn't they have done all this modernization in the 15 years I wasn't there. 03-wink

*Hello 3 hour class break and hump to Purple Onion!

You have been gone a long time. That's been gone for 7-8 years.

I started at UAB in the Fall of 2002 when it was already gone.

It must have closed earlier in 2002. I started in the fall of 2000 and ate there a LOT the first couple of years.

I used to have a cup of coffee and a bagel with cream cheese there every morning after Biology...

So sad... Ahh, the good ole days...

And apparently Starbucks took your ability to spell as well.

Yeah and there is now a new computer lab directly across from Starbucks in the Education Building.

RE: Construction around UAB campus
In 1972 when I got my MA in Secondary Ed (from the hand of Dr. Joe Volker), the Library was at the south end of the second floor of Tidwell Hall and the only coffee available on campus was from the 30 cup percolator in Dr. Hubert Harper's office in the basement (Its picture was in the first UAB Annual without a label since everyone knew that coffee pot).

Parking? There were no "lots" or "decks" back then. All parking was on the streets, and you considered a short walk of a few blocks as having been blessed. Anything closer was a miracle. The Baptist Book Store across the alley from the east end of the Towne House Hotel would constantly complain to UAB because students parked in its lot for classes.
