Charlie Coles
As I have posted on here before I have a friend who is "in the know" around the world of NCAA athletics and several times he has forwarded info to me that involves Kent State. This time I bring conference news to the flash family.

I understand that Charlie Coles is pretty much calling it a career at the end of this season. Assuming Coach Coles does not have a change of heart and this is accurate information that leaves the question to be answered, what will Miami do with the coaching vacancy?

The answer as I understand it may not be as simple of a transition as you would expect. As most MAC fans know Jermaine Henderson took over as the interim coach when Coach Coles went down last year and looked to be the "Jason Garrett" of the RedHawks. Apparently there are some questions regarding Coach Henderson's vault to the top of the Miami totem pole next season. Not because of anything he has done incorrectly or his style but because the athletic department may simply have interest in looking outside the conference.

Imagine personally being in that situation after all the success your program has had especially after Miami's non conference schedules. The RedHawks have landed solid recruits recently, beat BCS schools and cemented their program in the MAC yet suffer from the same fate Kent has...not landing an at large bid recently.

If you were the AD at Miami would you look to promote from within, such as Kent, or would you look outside of the conference such as Central Michigan and BG? Keep in mind going outside will potentially lead to transferring players on both ends.

I am in no way intending to disrespect RedHawk fans if/when they run across this post. I am just reporting interesting information from a friend "in the know".

God Bless CC. He did what I've been ranting and raving about since JC grabbed a golden parachute. I only wish that someday Kent will have a coach that will actually love the program for what its worth and stay until retiring.
As for your question, you said it best by saying that they have landed some mighty recruits. I think the best way to keep that spindle going is by hiring from within.

Climbing the ladder is certainly a key reason we see coach movement at our competitive level, but at the same time, almuni and supporters are not so patient, are they? If JC had agreed to stay for 5 more years, and was having a run of bad times like this, especially following the "failure" in the NCAA tourney last year, we'd be hearing the fans calling for his head.
Loyalty and patience needs to be worked on in all directions.

Holding Charlie up as a model for the coach you want to hire is a tough proposition: they broke the mold after him. How many guys are there out there like him, and how would you ever figure it out in an interview?
(Ans.: none, and I have no idea.)

Charlie Coles is a very good coach, but I don't consider him great or outstanding. I've seen him lose games due to coaching decisions. I don't consider any coach outstanding unless they consistently overachieve based upon the talent they are able to recruit at a particular school.

Charlie has got a good sense of humor, he is fan friendly (home or away fans) and coaches pretty well. Those kind are always overrated but they are also good people. I'd[/b] take a few coaching mistakes if we had more Charlie Coles.

"good sense of humor...fan friendly" You make the guy sound like a greeter at Wal-Mart!!
175-119 in 19 years in the MAC, 2nd among all MAC coaches and should move into first place this season. A Sweet 16 berth in 1999, 5 straight MAC tourney championship game appearances, a couple NBA guys, etc.
This guy runs a class program and is a class attack, and no team plays a more disciplined game, year in and year out.
I don't care what measure you use...Charlie is top-rate, period!

He's getting to the age where a greeter at Walmart might be his next career.
