For now, this is a football school (if it is that...). We have been ranked more than once, we have been to a bowl, we have been on ESPN more than a few times, on ABC a few times, almost every game is televised, we have had national buzz for the team and individuals, we send players to the NFL, we routinely draw 20K+ and we compete very strong in recruiting.

IN BB, we lose, don't make ANY ost season tourn's, we can't compete in recruiting, we don't sell tickets and absolutely no buzz exisits.

Is this still a question?!!

I agree that it is Football - we have virtually every game on TV and the casual fan sees us and younger kids have had the opportunity to see NIU on TV constantly.

The bball program gets on TV once or twice if we are lucky - also - they get no fans at games, even though we have a new arena!

Did you even pay attention to the question? What does how many games we have televised have to do with the "entire lifespan" of NIU athletics? That's a major problem on this board, lack of perspective. We have had athletics for 100 years and you think the answer is based on how many televised games we have.....incredible.

shut the hell up yuppie.

Yes I did thank you - NIU has virtually NO history in the world of college athletic sports - the last 20 years IS what defines NIU as either a bball or football school!

100 years is crap - NIU's designation as a football or bball school has NOTHING TO DO with 1922.

D1 athletics are what matters - when we were a teachers college has no bearing on any definition.

NIU IS a football school NOW!!!

As an expample - Indiana is a bball school - however they have been mediorce for the last 10 years - if they went and won the NCAA in Big 11 5 out of 8 years they would be looked at as a football school to generations growing up.

Everything is about perspective!

I agree we are a football school NOW. However, that was NOT the question. Also, the question was not asked in the context of "since we became a D1 school." Believe me, basketball was king in the early 70's. My honest opinion is that we have not clearly delineated the basketball/football issue one way or the other. We have had a series of relatively short periods of success in both, but we have not maintained it for an extended period of time.

My point is that NO ONE IDENTIFIED WITH THIS SCHOOLS PROGRAMS WITH ANY SPORT before the 70's.
