slapshot Wrote:rocketbandman ~ The University of Findlay started a Division One program from scratch and got competitive real quick. The whole deal is dependent on who the school would hire. The head guy and his assistants make or break the entire program. Of course it takes some luck in recruiting, just like it does in all of the sports at this level.
Bleedinorange, you are so right about T Flannigan, what an individual he was and stood for. But, losing him was only one small piece of the slow ride down. Unfortunately, it is always many things that happen when a program slides. If it was just one, they could push the button and reverse direction over night. Imop, the biggest factor in bg's slide was, as I said earlier, the big boys got serious about hockey, and started pouring the bucks into it. Arena's, budgets, etc. It's very easy to see who wins at the Pro Level, the teams that spend the most money. LIkewise in college, the teams that have the most, end up at the top.
Slapshot shoots, he scores!!
Great points. I've mentioned my buddy before who is an associate V.P. in the athletic department at The Ohio State Uni......oh whatever, and he was the one responsible for the fund raising for their new arena. The "Schott" I think? The prick even tried to hit me up for some $$$'s. Yeah right, Go Blue!!
Anyway, as soon as the new facility was completed, lo and behold, their program went straight up. Kids went there because of the facility and because of the name of the institution. How can BG or any mid-major compete with that?
Wings gonna take it all this year?

Bleedin ~ You can't compete, you just hope they screw up.....If a mid major goes head to head on a kid, they will never get him.....unless they are dam lucky.....I would love to be John Markell and recruit against bg for a big time kid....that would be a no brainer.....you can watch the blue jackets down the street, and if you are the real deal, they will be watching you!
Anyway, how do you compete....you get a stud goalie to start with....or pray that your goalie turns into a big timer.....then get the best of the rest, tier two kids, because you probably won't get a shot at the top level ones, and then hope to God that a couple of those turn into pro players....then you will have a chance. The big difference between the dogs and the cats, is that when the cats make a mistake, during a game, the dogs make you pay.......bottom line, you need a difference-maker....a tru goal scorer......a Nelson Emmerson, Brian Holzinger, Brian Hills....those guys were difference-makers......they could flat out win a game for you......bg doesn't and hasn't had that for awhile now, and I don't see one on the radar screen.....All of the Big Dogs have them....all of them, including Miami.....

They will go as far as the goaltending will take them.

They have to score for that statement to be accurate. Right now all Detroit seems to be doing pretty consistently is getting called for penalties.

Looks like they're starting to take more shots this period, but it's scary how long Nashville is able to keep the puck in Detroit's end at times.

This is reminding me of Anaheim all over again. They better step it up big time in this 3rd period.

:37 seconds into the 3rd period and Kris Draper ties it at 1-1. Maybe they listened to me when I said they need to step it up. Hopefully that will get them going.

Detroit leads 2-1 now in the third period, and get this:
Tigers 6
Toronto 3
bottom of 8th inning
Can the Tigers start 3-0!
