Ok, let's make a lonnnnng list with this one.

Each day, I'm going to be posting a memory of one of the great Razorback games. The only days I won't be able to are May 14-20, when I'll be in NYC. While I'm gone, you guys fill this up with as many great games as you can. Then, when I come back, I'll list more. Consider this as a comfort and a way to think good thoughts before this next football season.

Game 1 - Arkansas 27, Texas 6
January 1, 2000 - Cotton Bowl - Dallas, Texas

The Razorbacks came into the game as heavy underdogs to the 9-2 Longhorn team. In front of a Cotton Bowl record crowd, the first half proved to be a defensive struggle, as both teams headed to the locker rooms tied 3-3 at halftime.

With the ball at their own 1, QB Clint Stoerner narrowly missed two safties before finding Anthony Lucas on a long bomb on third down. That led to a drive capped by Cedric Cobbs's 30 yd TD reception, and UA never looked back.

Cobbs became the first freshman in Cotton Bowl history to be named offensive MVP....

....while DJ Cooper took home defensive MVP honors, leading a viscious defensive attack that held Texas to -27 rushing yards and sacked QBs Major Applewhite and Chris Simms eight times.



Beating the hated rival in the cherished bowl.

Game #2 - Arkansas 42, Alabama 6
September 1998, Fayetteville, AR

Houston Nutt's first two games (La-Lafayette and SMU) were considered easy games, and the Alabama game appeared to be his first 'test'. He and the HOGS passed with flying colors. The first half was actually a tight one, 7-6 most of the way...until Stoerner found a wide open Joe Dean Davenport to push the lead to 14-6 at halftime. The halftime speech was noted for when Coach Nutt turned to the trooper and said "We're coming"...and Chrys Chukwuma added "and we're bringing hell with us!". The HOGS indeed brought hell, unleashing a defense that send John David Phillips into chaos, held Heisman hopeful Shaun Alexander to 47 yds rushing, and the HOGS cruised, as Cobbs, Chukwuma, and even Eric Branch scored TDs, giving the HOGS their 42-6 rout, the worst defeat for an Alabama team in 40 years.

Game 3- Arkansas 31, Oklahoma 6
Orange Bowl - Miami, Florida - Jan. 2, 1978

Oklahoma came into the game #2 in the country, the Razorbacks at #6. However, the Sooner Swagger made OU a 17 pt favorite. When Coach Lou Holtz suspended star RB Ben Cowins, the Vegas boards pulled the Orange Bowl off due to the massive OU betting. Enter Roland Sales. Sales would set an Orange Bowl record with 205 yds rushing, and OU QB James Lott, who at first promised a national audience that OU "would show the world how to run the wishbone properly", found himself on his back or racing for mercy most of the game. An NBC crowd and a packed Orange Bowl crowd watched as Arkansas totally dismantled the Sooners. The Razorbacks would go 11-1, but the media chose 11-1 Notre Dame as national champion instead of the Razorbacks, who were hoping to at least claim a piece of the crown.

Sigh...I'll keep doing em anyways, lol.

Game #4 - "Seventh Heaven"
Arkansas 58, Mississippi 56 (7 OT)
2001 - Oxford, MS

In a game called college football's best by CNNSI and ESPN, and also named ESPN's #2 game of 2001 (only behind Game 7 of D'Backs-Yankees), the Razorbacks and Rebels slugged it out in the longest game in college football history. Almost 1000 yds of offense was gained, 9 lead changes, and records were set for most plays in a game, longest game, most OTs in a game, most points scored in a OT by one team (and combined teams), and as mentioned earlier, it was college football's longest ever game.

The stars were Cedric Cobbs, Fred Talley, and Brandon Holmes, in which all 3 RBs had 100+ yd games, DeCori Birmingham and Jason Peters for spectacular 2 pt conversion catches, Mark Pierce for his 3 TD performance and a powerful surge late in the game, and of course Matt Jones, the freshman QB who met Hesiman hype Eli Manning stride for stride, and Jermaine Petty, who made the game winning tackle on 4th and goal, ending the game and setting off mass celebrations in the Natural State.

Great one there, thanks. Keep em coming. Btw, for those who don't know, Kenny Sandlin is marrying Scott Bull's daughter LeAnn. Looks like that family will have some generations of UA football players to come.

Here's my installment for today.

Arkansas 27, Kentucky 20
1998 - Little Rock - ESPN National Audience

Hal Mumme brought his Aerial Attack, led by Tim Couch, to the Rock to take on 3-0 Arkansas, who just came off the 42-6 stomping of Alabama. Couch proved to live up to his hype, picking the secondary apart in building a 20-7 lead for the 'Cats. However, late in the third, and with UK driving to possibly make it 27-7, David Barrett made a huge INT and raced down into the Wildcats' red zone, setting up a TD and sparking a furious Razorback comeback. Kentucky wouldn't give up easily, as with under a minute to go in the game, Couch drove them to the Arkansas 1. On fourth down, with only seconds to go, Couch's pass was overthrown (too high) and War Memorial exploded. Hogs moved to 4-0, 2-0 SEC and entered the polls for the first time that year.

Arkansas 25, Tennessee 24
1992- Knoxville, TN

Hogs were 1-4, Tennessee was 4-0 and #4 in the country. Hog D contained Heath Shuler while Lunney threw a bomb to Ron ****erson, Orlando Watters returned a huge punt for a touchdown, and Todd Wright kicked a 45 yd FG with 4 seconds left, giving the HOGS their first win over Tennessee and one of the biggest upsets in Razorback history.

Arkansas 18, Arizona State 17
1985 Holiday Bowl - San Diego, CA

Hogs led early, then fell behind and trailed most of the second half. Kendall Trainor kicks a last second FG that puts Arkansas over the top. Hatfield's first (and only) bowl win at Arkansas.

Oh man Boarney...I was there!!!

I helped tear the posts down that day...one of my all time favorite games and memories.
