My great-great-great-grandmother is Martha (sister to Valentine and Anderson - also confirmed it is only three "greats" for me).

I have no idea what degree of cousin we are - but we are. :)

As Abercrombie & Fitch tried (unsuccessfully) a few years ago - West Virginia: It's all relative.

She looks nothing like the woman playing her. I do see a little Kevin Costner in him though.

Blood feud

I dated a Hatfield that claimed her family lineage was a part of the fued...

Wait. A Hatfield out of "West Virginia"?

I know where this is going. She didn't like carrots too did she?

She came out of ohio so don't know how that fits into it..

You should have watched a little longer...it went full badass. But it is based on actual events so it takes a little while for it to rev up.

So you're on the C-USA board with fans from Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Florida and you thought it would be a good idea to insult southerners huh? I would respond in kind but there are to many fine Texan conference mates on here.

I guess it depends on your definition. I lived in Louisville...it was certainly NOT the south. Lexington was absolutely the south.

I could take you to some places in VA that would leave no doubt in your mind that it is most certainly the South. Some examples - Dickinson County (home of Dr. Ralph Stanley), Buchanon County (the only county in the US that had 0 blacks for many years & one of the last courthouse lynching sites), and Russell County. Even closer to civilization like Floyd County/Amherst County/Pittsylvania County will convince you.

Being from the coal fields of VA, I can tell you that though the Hatfields & McCoys get the most publicity people have been hung and strung... stuck like pigs.. and disappearing for centuries in that area. The term "redneck" came from coal wars in where the companies abused miners to the point of war. Even today, the union miners will flatten your tires (or lips) if you cross them wrong.

I would advise watching "The Wild & Wonderful Whites of WV", produced by Jonny Knoxville. That's more a of a WV twist to the VA south.

Half of all my living relatives are Southerners from the great state of Alabama and all of them from my mother's side. Her great (my great great) grandfather was a Confederate soldier who was captured by the Yanks' at the Battle of Chickamauga--thankfully he escaped so if you don't mind I can say dumb*** Texans or Southerners till the cows come home. I've pulled off or (worse) said a few dumb*** things of my own in my 61 years. Give yourself time--so will you. (Some of our Texas politicians fall in the "dumb-a$$' category as far as I'm concerned so its not just about non-Texans with me, either).

The Hatfields and McCoys and Texans Bonnie and Clyde are just about in the same category in history as far as this historian is concerned. Both involved with totally senseless killings of fine folks in most cases. I don't think either of the above should be glorified in any form or fashion (not that anyone on this board has done such).

GMG!

PS: My dads side of the family have been in Texas since 1833 and Texans may have studied about a few of them in Texas History books.

WVA fighting for the confederates in the civil war is a bit of a stretch. They were still bickering in Bluefield, WV/VA at the turn of the century. I would say some did/some didn't - the state government was pro-union I would say.

WV is a hybrid IMO - influenced from the north by Pittsburgh, to the west by Columbus and to the south by the likes of Charlotte and Knoxville.

Northern, VA is full of Yanks and is very much a part of the megalopolis from Boston to Washington.
