O/T CMU hire
A good reason not to get hung up on speculation which wasn't even close on this one.

(I got this story from the main MAC BBS - which is the best source for MAC stories or stories about one of the schools.).

Here is from the CMU Rivals.com site.

RE: O/T CMU hire
While I think Ohio U made a good hire Keno had alot of issues at Providence I believe with player control. I believe James Still was at Providence during Keno's watch.

From the scout boards:

2. The coaching staff need to monitor their players off the court and in the class room, in order to have a stable foundation from which to grow. PC fans won't put this entirely on Keno's shoulders, but a number of the players found their ways into a number of off-court issues, leading to 3 expulsions related to two separate incidents, and a number of transfers (several of which Keno's staff recruited, despite their not being BE material

Sounds like CMU's program may not have gotten the magic bullet they sought.

BTW, thought I read that Keno is the son of Dr. Tom Davis, longtime Iowa coach.

If you look at the EZ is gone thread on Bankhoops Steve Bell hates this hire. CMU missed the boat which is good for us. I think NIU and EMU did very well with their hires.

CMU's FB and hoops are not where they should be.

As you know, the AD is feeling the heat.

RE: O/T CMU hire
Great Hire! Keno Davis took a Drake program which was a perennial bottom feeder in the Missouri Valley Conference and took it to the Top 20--first time since 1969. I lived in Des Moines, IA, minutes from the Drake campus and I watched almost all of Drake's games on TV and they were outstanding. He employs a very entertaining, high scoring offense and his teams were very fundementally sound. Keno was the toast of the town and when he left for Providence after getting Drake to the NCAA tournament (an impossibility for decades) everyone was crushed.

He didn't get much of a chance at Providence, which didn't stand much of a chance in the Big East, but his teams were competitive. When Ramsey was fired at EMU, I had Keno Davis on my wish list. He is an outstanding coach and has a great personality. CMU is lucky to have Keno Davis, great hire.

Let's also remember, Keno Davis was National Coach of Year in I believe 2008, his last year at Drake. He was poised to make a strong run in the NCAA tournament when Western Kentucky provided the highlight of the tournament with their desperation shot at the buzzer to beat them.

RE: O/T CMU hire
I've heard mixed reviews:

1). Yes PC (Providence College) is a near graveyard job.

2). Many feel that Keno won at Drake his ONE year with his father's talent.

MY opinion: The jury is out. The evidence doesn't line up enough for me to draw an inference.

BTW, again this makes my point: Why should a coach with a good job leave for a graveyard job?

Gary Waters went from Kent to Rutgers and ended up getting fired.

Groce left a very nice job at Ohio for a tough Illinois job.

Jim Christian left KSU for TCU and has come back to the MAC.

and, of course, Davis left Drake for Providence and ended up getting fired.
