RE: I'm not happy with coach K
well, i paid the western site for the webcast and it was the worst 9 bucks i've ever spent.
i've been closely following rocket basketball for 33 years and this was the worst performance i have ever witnessed. never, have i seen a UT team so disinterested, defensively unprepared, and beaten so badly by an opponent of comparable talent.
while depth and size are issues, we don't have a talent deficit. these guys can play ball. however the strategy and execution is lacking (to the point of near total failure today). we were destroyed by matt stainbrook, a big, slow, but skilled and alert center. he repeatedly was allowed to catch the ball in his spots and work his man one on one, or wait out passive double teams till he found wide open teammates. I'd say, literally, 90% of western's shots were wide open jumpers or layups. I don't know if the scout was that poorly prepared or the game planning that faulty or the execution just totally lacking, but we took away nothing. they did exactly what they wanted every time down the court and we never adjusted.
i still don't think most fans who called for joplin's head realize what we got rid of. while there were some valid reasons for a change (gambling thing, attendance, etc...) stan knew how to prepare his team, organize his staff, and have his guys ready to play with an approach that gave them the chance to win. for example, when were undersized in the post his teams were coached to dig the ball out on entry passes (perimeter defenders aggressively collapsing down on the post player forcing turnovers or passes back up top creating offensive resets). today, western repeatedly easily entered the ball in the post and either methodically worked their way in one on one, or watched as we lazily came over for the double and found wide open teammates rolling to the basket for uncontested layups.
on offense, it was basically juice or pierson making a play or nothing.
delino dear was in for a minute, played poorly on his first defensive possession (like everyone else) and was pulled for the rest of the game. the handling of his development is a major disappointment. he is a solid talent and the only big guy we have than create some advantages w his length, but seems to be perpetually in the doghouse w few signs of progress.
juice has the game, but seems increasingly unfocused. dennis is a monster at this level attacking the basket and using his athleticism but takes most of his shots from 24 feet out and rarely has anything run to get him the ball where he is most dangerous.
i could go on, and while i'm not calling for coach k to be fired and hopeful we can turn it around, i am becoming increasingly convinced something is rotten on Bancroft. call it the curse of joplin or the effect of too many tough close losses on a young team, but these guys look beaten. eastern just won at ball st tonight with half our talent, just better defensive energy and hustle. c'mon staff, c'mon players, play to win, prepare aggressively, rocket fans will support you if you bring it, but this type of effort stains everyone involved and starts at the top.
