HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Dwayne Brown, a 6-8, 240-pound forward from Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Ill., to a national letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the third signee of the spring signing period.
Brown was a standout player for Coach Todd Franklin at SIC, where he helped lead the team to a final record of 33-3 and a No. 4 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Division I Final Poll.
"Dwayne is another outstanding player who will bring size to our team," Eustachy said. "He is a big and strong player who will be a good rebounder and defender. We are excited about him joining the Southern Miss program."
The Kingston, Jamaica, native averaged 8.7 points , 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, while also garnering All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference and All-Region XXIV honors. As a freshman, Brown was part of the Falcon team that finished 34-2 overall and No. 2 in the final polls. In his two seasons at SIC, the Falcons remained in the Top 5 of the national rankings and had a combined record of 67-5.
Brown is the fourth signee for the 2004 Southern Miss signing class. The Golden Eagles signed Henry Salter (Gulfport, Miss.), a 6-foot-4 forward from Gulfport High School, during the fall signing period. In the spring period, the program also signed Rashaad Carruth (College Park, Ga.), a 6-foot-3 guard from Indian Hills Community College, and Shakiem Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a 6-foot-9 forward/center from the Globe Institute of Technology.
