Both games were on over-the-air TV, but CBS had been showing college hoops all day, giving it a lead-in.

More casual fans go to ESPN or CBS for college basketball. A person has to be a committed Big East fan to find their games on Fox. A person running a TV in a bar or restaurant is more likely to park their TV on ESPN or CBS than Fox during basketball season.

The same thing happens in college football. Games on ESPN networks generally outrate games on Fox networks.

In the meantime, Fox has given the Big East a great financial deal. They'll take the money and run.

It has nothing to do with the network. Fox does great for other sports. The Big East and PAC-12 have a similar problem, very few people have an affinity with their schools.

FOX may do great with other sports, but in college athletics, FOX numbers trail those for ABC/ESPN, so adjustments have to be made for that.

Of course not, the numbers reflect the networks.

I do. Arizona sure. Blue blood Western school. But USC...basketball? I’ll take UNM and SDSU any day.
I’ll give you a moment to look up past results and attendance numbers on USC.

USC has the football brand name so that by itself will get people’s attention. UNM still has a name but SDSU was a glorified SJSU before Fisher took over.
