yeah, we have been horrific since he left....C'mon goon we've won Macs and been to the Orange Bowl since he left. We have had 2 great HC since he left.
Whoa there NIU05, he never said or implied "we have been horrific!"
That post was simply noting that NIU missed an opportunity to elevate the kind of person who would have been a great fit. Selfishly, I got to know coach Pittman and saw how closely he worked with coach Novak, connected with the kids, was able to "coach up" the linemen, and was interested in the chance to become the head guy. However, because the opportunity wasn't assured, he considered other options and several other programs paid him bigger bucks for his knowledge, work ethic, skill, and ability to relate to the players.
This post proves to me that I wasn't alone in wishing Sam got the chance, even knowing that he -- like Kill and Doeren -- probably would have had a P5 come after him as well.
I always thought Sam would ultimately replace Joe, but, it never happened. He is a tremendous coach.
To expand on what these guys have stated yeah we had two good coaches who left the second the phone rang like a lot of people in the industry. Sam wanted to be a Novak and stay. He was tired of moving, didnt like the attitude of kids at other programs he had been at, and his wife liked dekalb.
He had no kids and really liked to watch kids grow NIU was the first place he saw that.
