Bingo. If the coach has options, the school has no leverage. Heupel wasn't sought after like Fuente and Norvell.

Scott frost wasn't on the same level as fuente and norvell? As a former OC from oregon as well as other experience, scott frost's only option was ucf?

Can either of you name me a coach that we can compare to norvell's situation that can break their contract and only owe $500,000?

I'm having a hard time finding coaches with such a small buyout if the coach leaves for another job.

This is a matter that is largely misunderstood and misreported. I'm not confident that there is any reliable info out there regarding buyouts. The confusion comes from whether we're talking about the school's cost to fire a coach, or how much a school gets when someone hires their coach. These items are always included in contracts, but they are not always mirroring tables.

For example, the link below says that Memphis gets $4M if someone hires Norvell. I doubt that's accurate. I think that's what it costs to fire Norvell. But it illustrates that - unless you read the contract yourself - you should not believe all the numbers that are reported on this subject.

Cost to hire a coach from another school

The old contract was paying 70% of norvell's contract if we terminate. Norvell would pay $500,000 to terminate it from his end. I did read somewhere that it increased 60,000 per year, but i'm not sure if that's correct.
