I didn't "kept saying"; rather, I said it once when it was first posted because the rumor I had heard a week earlier had him coming in as a student volunteer. I immediately got the inside scoop and posted it.
2. From what I'm hearing Berkman is out of the picture as a Rice coach-- now and in the future. I understand numerous big donors made their voices heard against Berkman to both Karlgaard and directly to Leebron.
Berkman won't be a candidate as long as Bobby Tudor heads up the BOT. Tudor came out publicly in opposition to the bathroom bill.
I am still wondering what "numerous" means.
More than just a few. I'm not going to get more specific, but it was not just one or two or three donors who had issues with Berkman.
Walt – With all due respect, I would like to clarify to the readers of the Parliament that your statement regarding Lance Berkman’s lack of support from “major donors” does not include the Reckling Family. And to further clarify, we believe Lance would be a fantastic candidate to be the next head baseball coach at Rice University. Our family (like many others) is one that has been involved with Rice Baseball in some form or fashion for many decades and we will always be proud of the National Championship team and the countless nationally ranked teams under the helm of Coach Graham. Our family is not one to politicize the election of the next head baseball coach and we certainly respect the fact that the decision lies in the hands of David Leebron, Joe Karlgaard and Rice’s Board of Directors, all of which are trusted fiduciaries of the University and its athletic department. I would appreciate if you were more specific with your comments to mitigate the birth of illegitimate rumors and hope we can all respect the process going forward.
Mahalo for that very thoughtful post. If Berkman is considered a legit candidatefor a coaching position at Rice, then his views, and ability to express them publicly should be part of the process. To rule him out without that kind of process is just as wrong as throwing Tudor out for supporting a repeal. I don't pretend to know that either position is entirely correctAs a rep of the university, either should be as apolitical as possible, IMHO.
