RE: Va Colleges Spending on Football & Basketball
Revenues come from two primary sources, student athletic fees and donations. Might add some revenue from ticket sales, but this hinges on winning and a better parking setup. The development officer who convinces wealthy donor(s) that God put him and/or her on earth to fund parking facilities will deserve a bonus.

The athletic department doubtless has a handle on "bird in hand" pending donations. Will be interesting to see what revenue and expenses look like over next 3 - 4 years. Particularly if overall numbers don't surge, where the Tribe competes becomes as important as how much is spent competing.

The notion of "punching above one's weight" is a bit more compelling in non-conference competition than in conference. For every school valorously punching above its weight, there is probably another conference school with a larger enrollment, higher student activity fees, larger budget (or fewer sports to fund), and less stringent academic requirements perfectly happy to punch below weight and its ticket to the NCAA tournament.
