What a ridiculous article. The writer does not know the WAC and he has an inflated opinion of the Horizon. They just lost their best team. Below are the 2017 records of the schools from the cities that the article mentioned:
Detroit 8-23 RPI 289
Cleveland State 9-22 RPI 263
Milwaukee 11-24 RPI 260
CSUB 25-10 RPI 59
NMSU 28-6 RPI 55
UVU 17-17 RPI 180
A direct flight from Phoenix to Bakersfield is 90 minutes. To Salt Lake City 90 minutes and Las Cruces is a bus trip or a one hour flight to El Paso plus 45 minute but trip to Las Cruces. So by travel or quality of competition, the Horizon is not a good move for GCU.
What Colangelo said was “I would foresee over the next four or five years a lot of schools making changes,” Colangelo explained. “Maybe a new conference developing.”
That is realistic. There will be changes over the next five years. There could be a conference merger. Some conferences will tighten their footprint. There could be some conference re-alignment based on geography. There is a much better chance of that rather than GCU flying to the eastern time zone to play bad basketball programs.
I agree. With ESPN losing money (and subscribers) hand over fist, the moves to grab schools in markets to chase a potential TV deal are likely over. I think we might finally see some common sense realignment moves from here on out.
