Agree that situation was crazy but the rule stems from having to complete the hole with the same ball you started with so players can't drive/approach with one type of ball and putt with another.

The situation is unfortunate and the rules of golf are ridiculous, but I'm not in favor of legislating for every possible situation. In the rest of our lives we will never see another guy accidentally drop his ball off the back of his shoe into a hazard.

There is a whole discussion possible about decreasing chances for error by putting out (this guy, Lexi Thomas, etc).

The link above has a video of it happening last year at the Player's championship.

Stand corrected. Still about a 1 in 10M chance of it happening.

(100 golfers playing 30 events per year across 4 tours over the last 30 years)
