I've always said, to simply say "we are your neighbors, support us" or "you graduated from here, support us" is lazy and not a compelling enough reason to build a relationship.
The new Dekalb mayor is an NIU alumn and seems keen to pushing the NIU-Dekalb thing.
I know Jerry Smith and he is indeed a proud NIU alum. He also is an NIU football and basketball avid fan, season ticket holder, and HAF donor. He has bled red and black for many years. I can guarantee that the NIU - community relationship will improve.
This pleases me, thank you for this update, I had been wondering if anyone had any information on the new Mayor. If NIU alums should be excited or not, clearly we should be. Thank you.
I knew Jerry would win because he knows everybody in town. For years, he has sat by me in basketball. Every game, dozens and dozens of people walking by stop to say hi and chat. I have never seen anyone who knows more people. He is a positive guy, communicator, bridge builder, and everyone really likes him.
I'll second that. He's really a good guy.
