Kids are stupid. They often don't appreciate what they have.

Remember, the human brain isn't fully formed until sometime in an individual's early twenties. Usually about 22-23. The last parts of the brain to mature are the ones that control decision-making and long term planning. Hence why you get so many stories of kids that have everything going for them, then they do something stupid and end up dead or in prison.
