You buy one book only.

For example;
Person 2 (me) tells you about the exchange. You buy one book for Person 1 who told me about it. Person 3 (you) tells 6 people. Those 6 people buy 1 book each (6 total) for person 0. Those 6 people then tell 6 people to buy 1 book each (36 total) for person 3 (you). The more people you get involved the more you will end up with.

I've heard of this scheme before. Basically person A is usually out the money on a book that Person B received. Person B than tells others about the idea, and gets books from each of them, while he fails to send the books to Person A.

It's pretty similar to a scheme run by TV Evangelist's. You rely on faith and the kindness of others that you'll get what you spent back in return.

For the record, this scheme is considered a pyramid scheme under US Law and is technically illegal. Government doesn't push it that often because these things pop up and go away regularly.
