Cinci has those same teams in their footprint and even worse in b-ball. I see your point but ultimately what holds UT back is money and I'd add, need. Toledo or teams like Toledo moving into Big 12 just means the Big 12 has become "second tier." Given personal choice, playing the cities in the AAC would be of more interest anyhow. I like the MAC. I'd rather stay in the MAC. But ultimately, the city nor the school are looking to identify with Mt. Pleasant, that's not a step up.
