Can't his school be associated with them through relationships that don't manifest on the playing fields? Sending his basketball or baseball team to play Stanford or Michigan has null impact on whether they would be associated academically.

By joining the BIG, his school would have the athletic association. All BIG members are also added to the CIC. That brings the academic prestige all university presidents want.

But they could still enter into academic relationships with those schools outside the auspices of the CIC, correct? Or have those relationships with the Pac-12's elite schools even while not being a part of the Pac-12?
