Interesting comments today from GS coach Fritz on expansion of SunBelt
Heard an interview today on a local sports show here in Statesboro with Coach Fritz.
He said he really liked the Big 12 model of 10 teams where all teams played each other in football. That means 9 conference games. Said he is not a big fan of a championship game for the league, especially if the league goes to a 9 game conference schedule which I assume means 10 teams in football--- I would assume this would mean jetisoning Idaho.
He said a number of coaches in the league now don't really support a championship game and said it would probably not be a big money maker at this point.
He did say his views are his views and don't necessarily echo what our AD or President thinks.
I just found it interesting to hear him more supporting of a 10 football team league instead of a 12 football team league. I wonder if this sentiment is shared by other schools/coaches in football.
Of course even if Idaho is let go we still have 11 in basketball and olympic sports which is not ideal.
Fritz also said it is a goal of GS to get to the point where we only schedule 1 "money game" per year. Right now we basically are scheduling 2 per year.
It just seems the choices for the Sun Belt at this point are all over the place. Downsize to 10 football schools or go to 12? Going to 12 olympic sports teams or 14? Keep NMSU or Idaho or let one or both go in a couple years?
The official position of the conference is hard to define at this point. I just think there are several different options and I am not sure at this point if any of them can be agreed to by 8-9 schools.
