Until either 93-94 or 94-95 school year, you had to show cause why you needed an email address (e.g. a class that required it or the like) in order to get one. As I understand, it wasn't hard, but I never qualified. I graduated in December 1995 never having used an email for class in any way shape or form. Further, if you lived off-campus, you were limited to dialing in on telnet, which was a colossal pain in the ass and decreased your likelihood of utilizing Rice computer facilities if you weren't working in a computer lab.

Lance was drafted in 1997, so I don't view it as unreasonable that he didn't use email for class.

It was Lance's telling of the story I was poking at -- it's certainly possible he didn't have or ever use an owlnet account. But the story was:
Quote:When he was at Rice in the mid-1990s, he tells them, "We didn't even have email". "If you had a Rice email account, you were considered on the very, very leading edge of technology," Berkman said. "I never had one, obviously."

I had the same experience as Noodle. My freshman year (Lance's sophomore year), every O-Week group spent a few minutes down in the basement computer lab signing up for our Owlnet accounts.

And of course, we had no idea how big a deal email would be at the time. I remember there were two Lovett guys a year or two ahead of me who were "sperman@owlnet.rice.edu" and "anus@". And one girl my year went with "easyd@". sperman ended up petitioning to get his email changed later on (because he didn't want to put that with his contact info on his resume?). I think easyd did the same thing. I forget, but anus might have just rolled with it.
