I don't understand why programs import FCS schools from outside their state or neighboring states to play these games.
Seems likely to be that its an extra home game with a smaller guarantee than required for a Go5 buy game.
Of course, thats less of an issue in Ohio, since we have eight FBS schools and only one FCS school.
In 1936 the Southern Conference added schools in addition to VT, UVa, Clemson, South Carolina, NC State, WF, MD, and Duke. The schools were Richmond, William & Mary, Citadel, Davidson, Furman, and George Washington. When the ACC schools left over football issues, most ACC schools continued to play these other SoCon schools for many, many years - that's the connection.
Great story except for the fact that UNC played Richmond twice, The Citadel once, and never played Furman as a SoCon game.
Also, George Washington was not admitted to the SoCon in 1936. They joined in 1941. The schools that joined in 1936 were The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, Wake Forest, and William & Mary.
Quote:However if you are a NC school and you are going to play an FCS school, do you get more mileage out playing Western Carolina, or Furman, or Richmond. If you are in NC, your game gets the same coverage in NC that it always gets, if you play Furman or Richmond, you might get a little coverage on page 2 or on the third nightly sports news story in Greenville/Spartanburg, or Richmond.
Both the Richmond and Greenville newspapers, radio, and TV cover ACC sports on far greater basis than the typical small amount of coverage they give the FCS teams. Any gained coverage is minimal at best. If the NC schools desire greater coverage in these areas they should quit being mediocre and they'll get more coverage.
Kaploney - I don't know where you get your information but GW joined the SoCon in 1936 and stayed until 1970. http://www.soconsports.com/fls/4000/soco...EM_ID=4000
