Sorry that nc was a very progressive southern state that has many hbcus and that many African Americans prefer those.

Also in the historical context much of nc was progressive due to the fact nc isn't good land for plantations, the population of nc was split literally down the middle during the civil war with half serving in the CSA and half in the USA, as well we had one of the first if not the first all free black communities, Virginia was the host of the capital of the CSA and the part of Virginia that was progressive and against slavery split during the war aka West Virginia. As well it should be noted that the fiercest anti slavery section of nc was in the mountains. Home to my beautiful Boone, NC.

North Carolina was FANTASTIC for plantations. Not for your average cotton plantation, but for tobacco and rice. North Carolina and Virginia both were actually world renowned for their tobacco leaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Such success from this crop, is actually what sparked the first MASS importation of African slaves. The mountain regions of NC did mostly remain loyal, but as did the coastal areas. This is due to the fact that both extreme Western and Eastern NC are unsuitable for cash crops, hence the no need of slavery and no desire to support the outmatch Rebels.
North Carolina was not split down the half during the Civil War; and even if it was, that doesn't mean that those that fought for the Union believed in any form of African American civil rights whatsoever. If I remember correctly, 170,000 men served during the war from North Carolina, 150,000 of which fought for the Confederacy. If my math is correct, that is not "split literally down the middle." Please, don't confuse yourself with pro-Union supporters and progressive. If you do, then I suggest reading up on this little thing in American history called Reconstruction.
