Wow. Not many people grow up in Ames. Metro area of 90,000. I think it's the smallest city for any P-5 school.

You'd be surprised. There's a a few smaller. Depends if you want to do it by city pop orMSA.

I know Auburn, Starkville, Oxford, Corvallis, West Lafayette, Clemson, Palo alto and Bloomington are all smaller sized (in general, not necessarily smaller than ames) based on city pop.

Starkville and Oxford both have less than 25,000 residents. Mississippi is such an interesting state... it is just small town after small town. Jackson is the only city over 75,000.

It's a similar situation to UCONN. Storrs, CT only has a population of about 15,000, but the state of Connecticut as a whole follows UCONN as their team. That's about 3.6 million.

People in both states really get into their college programs because neither state has a homegrown professional team.
