The award is for the most outstanding football player, not the quarterback of the most outstanding team. ESPN has morphed it into that which it was never intended to be. I don't know if Winstin or Manziel are the most outstanding, but they are certainly among the top 5 of whoever they might be. The award is not really supposed to be reserved for members of teams who are in contention. That has also become a marketing ploy for the "Mouse". They like a nice neat little package of best team, best player. I miss the days when it could go to a Staubach or a George Rogers. Those guys wouldn't even be invited to the banquet today. It's a shame. And one last point Mariota shouldn't be out (even though he will be invited to the banquet) because of 1 lost game.

First off- watched a show on CBSSN about the Army/Navy '63 game- Navy was ranked #2. So, Staubach absolutely would have gotten the award that year even in today's scene. Not as sure about Rogers.

Mariota isn't out because of the lost game but moreso because he played like crap in that lost game. The others played well in their losses if they had any.
I knew Navy was ranked #2 but it was past the era of Service Academy football prominence. He was very deserving in every regard. Today however I'm not sure a cadet would get consideration no matter what. I admit I could be wrong about that, but they aren't the commercial commodity that most want to push. There have been others over the years that played on 2 and 3 loss teams that have won but couldn't win today.

As for Mariota, his whole team was outplayed in that loss. Oregon was exposed and really what I can't see is why they are still ranked where they are. Right now I see a large gap between Alabama, Florida State, and Ohio State and the rest with one exception, Baylor. Baylor could be every bit as good as the top three, or they could be an Oregon waiting to be exposed. Right now nobody knows for sure but they are gaining credibility each week.

My main point Stever was that it should still be an award for the most outstanding player, not the best player on the most outstanding team.

I think we saw what you were/are wanting 2 years ago with RG3. Baylor that year was hardly the best team(not even as good as they are this year)- but he still won it.

I think if a Navy ever got to be #2 in the country again, they would get not only consideration, but quite frankly a disproportionate amount of attention quite frankly!!!! It'd be all we are hearing. And, yes, that would impact the Heisman if they had a player a la Roger Staubach come thru again!
