Tommy Tuberville will make $2.2 million next season at the University of Cincinnati, with his pay remaining roughly level over his five-year term.

That includes a series of retention bonuses in a term sheet negotiated by UC and its new football coach.

Former coach Butch Jones, who left in December for the University of Tennessee, was to make $1.575 million in 2013.

“I think it’s market rate,” UC’s Athletic Director Whit Babcock said. “I think it’s good for UC to have a coach of his stature. You could make the argument that there are coaches without his pedigree making more than that.”

The term sheet includes a raft of bonuses, including $35,000 for a top 25 national ranking at any season’s end, $100,000 for playing in a BCS bowl game and $50,000 for winning a conference championship.

The memorandum of understanding also includes a $2.1 million pool to pay and retain nine assistant coaches and a strength coach, compared to a $1.85 million pool for Jones.

There are other bonuses for the number of season tickets sold and the team’s academic ranking.

UC has not yet signed a full contract with Tuberville, who was hired Dec. 8 from Texas Tech University.

UC will pay up to $931,000 to buy out Tuberville’s Texas Tech contract. Jones still owes $1.4 million to UC for leaving in the middle of his contract.

Other measures in the term sheet include:

• $20,000 in moving expenses and $6,000 a month for three months for temporary housing.

• $25,000 for a “bowl family travel allowance” and 200 tickets to any bowl game.

• 14 season tickets and six “VIP” tickets for football games, and eight complimentary tickets for men‘s basketball games.

• Buyout fees of $2.5 million if Tuberville leaves in 2013, lowering to $550,000 if he leaves in 2017.

• Termination fees of $8.8 million if UC fires Tuberville in 2013, $6.6 million in 2014 and $2.4 million in 2015. Those fees continue to decrease until the contract expires in 2017.

Tuberville will pledge $5,000 per month, or $300,000 over five years, to support non-revenue sports at UC.

“I liked the sound of that,” Babcock said. “It’s a good cause.”
