DENTON, Texas – North Texas freshman Tony Mitchell was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. Mitchell led the Mean Green to a 1-1 split last week while averaging 21.5 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per game.

Mitchell posted the biggest combined points/rebounds total in the NCAA this year in a monster performance at South Alabama on Thursday. The freshman tallied 34 points – the most by a Sun Belt player this year – and 16 rebounds – also the most by a Sun Belt player this year – in leading the Mean Green to the overtime win.

He followed up that performance with a five block game at Arkansas State, which are the most blocks by an NT player since the 2005-06 season. For the week, Mitchell was 15-of-20 (75 percent) from the floor and 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the stripe for an average of 21.5 points and 12 rebounds per game.
