Can't believe only two people here voted for Badnarik in '04. For me '04 was just as big of a **** show as '16.

1984 Reagan
1988 Bush
1992 Perot
1996 Dole
2000 Bush
2004 Bush
2008 McCain
2012 Romney
2016 Trump

I was not particularly excited about any of these votes. Many were votes against the other candidate(s). Trump has been fascinating to watch. He may turn out to be my favorite vote.

My takeaway after 55+ years is that we as a society must find better candidates. Neither party represents me. Generally I want a strong foreign policy(diplomacy, economy & military) and I want the government to foster a positive environment for the private sector economy....for the most part the latter means, stay the bleep out of it. A strong private economy is the foundation of everything else we want to do.

I do not want the feds messing with social issues for the most part.

RE: My voting history, what's yours?
1988 Bush/41 over Dukakis
2004 Bush/43 over Kerry

Libertarian/3rd party every other time.

One of my grandparents lived from 1923-2006 and supported the following candidates:
1944 FDR/D
1948 Truman/D
1952 Stevenson/D
1956 Stevenson/D
1960 Nixon/R
1964 Goldwater/R
1968 Wallace/Ind.
1972 Nixon/R
1976 Carter/D
1980 Carter/D
1984 Mondale/D
1988 Dukakis/D
1992 Perot/Ind.
1996 Perot/Ind.
2000 Bush/R
2004 Bush/R

I have studied that list from time to time and tried to discover the common denominator or thread that links such various/conflicting candidates. Haven’t really come up with any satisfactory answer, though.

Sounds pretty much like a typical southern democrat of their generation. I would expect a lot of folks voted that way.

I knew a few people that I would expect voted at least 90% that way.

I have a sister who is a true swing voter. Votes that I know about:
72 McGovern
80 Reagan
88 HW
92 Perot
96 Clinton
00 W
04 W
08 Obama
12 Obama
16 Clinton

Mine is pretty boring-always Republicans for President, Senate and Governor. Also all Republicans in contested elections since the mid 90s. Did vote for Libertarians when I was in Tom Delay's House district (my district changed constantly in the 90s because the Democrats' famous Texas gerrymander and adjustments kept getting thrown out by the courts).
76 Ford
80, 84 Reagan
88, 92 HW
96 Dole
00,04 W
08 McCain
12 Romney
16 Trump

Yes, all Republicans. I started out a registered Republican but now I'm registered, Independent. To me the Republicans are the lesser of two bad options.

RE: My voting history, what's yours?
84 Reagan
88 Bush
92 Perot (my libertarian streak was already showing but I didn't recognize what it was at the time)
96 Clinton (Perot revealed himself to be a little too crazy to vote for him twice)
00 Bush
04 Non vote protest (even the protest candidates were crap)
08 McCain, holding my nose (debated voting Barr)
12 Johnson
16 I gave up. Not voting wasn't a protest; the whole thing felt like a phenomenal waste of time.

(I live in CA, so my vote or non vote is even more worthless than most.)

04 - Kerry

12 - Obama
16 - Hillary Clinton

When did I switch and why? Really, it was the impeachment of Bill Clinton over nothing (and remember I voted for Dole and Bush). About a week before the 1998 midterms, I remember saying to myself..."I want every Republican to lose", and that was it for me. George W Bush and his attacks on LGBT people as a campaign strategy in 04 was really the final straw. There's usually one Dem that I find so distasteful that I routinely vote for the GOP against her, but she'll never lose her seat.

I missed out on '08 by one year... It was my senior year in high school and me and my group of friends knocked doors for Obama in rural Ohio.

Agreed. 2000 was the last election in which there was any real ideological overlap to any significant degree. You had people like Zell Miller for Gore, and people like Jim Jeffords for Bush. I don’t know if 9/11 had any impact on that or not, but since then it’s seemed to me that liberal-GOP and conserva-Dem has gone from rare to virtually extinct.

RE: My voting history, what's yours?
I've pretty much been all over the map:

1992 - Bush
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Nader (didn't care for either Bush or Gore)
2004 - Kerry (wasn't a fan, but was desperately against Bush)
2008 - I voted 3rd party, but honestly don't remember who I voted for. I think I went libertarian.
2012 - Obama
2016 - Clinton
