RE: Goodman: Bartow Classic was a reminder UAB's return isn't over
A problem for UAB moving into a new conference (it would be the first move not engineered by Gene Bartow) is that there may be much suspicion that the system BOT may still be antiUAB, and the other conferences may not choose to deal with that set of problems. A school that is not "captain of its own (athletic) soul" may be hard to deal with over time.
When Ray Watts and the BOT closed down football, he may have thought UAB could stay in C-USA with just basketball only to find that UAB would be dropped. If he then found that there were no conferences desiring to add UAB under those circumstances, it may explain why he backtracked on football 6 months later. He did not want to risk being remembered as the President who killed the whole UAB athletic program and doomed its future growth in enrollment.
