RE: BBJ: Birmingham leaders weigh $30 million Legion Field upgrade
Mayor Woodfin can only do what the City Council provides him with the funding to do. I suspect that the $30 million figure for Legion Field upkeep and "improvements" did not originate with him, but came from the Council and to them from corporate entities in the city's metro area. There may be powerful business forces within the city that want to protect Legion Field from potentially being demolished -- a likely result of building any new downtown stadium.
Many folks are critical of B'ham because of it not being like the other major cities in regional states, but those cities do not have to operate within a state run under a 19th century values Constitution that was primarily designed to protect White Supremacy, state tax protection for big agricultural and industrial business as well as low income taxes for the top 10%. It has so far been very successful in all these pursuits to the detriment of its major cities.
What other state has passed a law (like Alabama did in 2016) effectively guaranteeing that its workers would provide the cheapest labor costs allowed in any American state?

Just 2 miles away, Birmingham has built it's own test case for neighborhood rejuvenation.
How has the neighborhood around the Birmingham Crossplex been rebooted with the new facility ?

As with the demographics around UAB, it takes decades of investment to grow a change in neighborhoods. The BBJ has listed new food and service outlets in the Five Points West area, but follow up investment over time is needed to make large changes. UAB is almost 50 years old and still growing.

RE: BBJ: Birmingham leaders weigh $30 million Legion Field upgrade
Believe it or not their trying to pull Both off, the preservation of Legion and buillding and a New Venue. The Venue would like to be able to utilize it year round to recoup the investment. Theirs a initity that wants it built know with a date set but dealing with the people that make the decisions seem to be, are at a lock on the decision, their waying everything from this to that, Their decision seems to based on what will be given up vs what will be made. In order to build, their going to have to give this and that up vs what will be made from the project. Your dealing with a decision based on the ruling people of a small paradox comapered to what the people of the entire region want. Meaning the deciding factors are from the small compounds of the inner city not the entire region which actually supports the inner part of the city. So what to do, Corporate is going to have to wave the juggernot to get it done.
You ever heard the expression you got what you got. See these people travel to Atlanta and Nashville and Miami. They don't care what Birmingham has, they do their thing, and are on their way on the weekends, these people that are in power in Birmingham aren't their on the weekends they don't truly care as long as they can get to hot Atlanta. See but that's the fight were trying to get this thing Built. But in the last 10 years their has been major strides against this. Is The Alabama Theatre still their. Check the accomplishments. Major Facility upgrades and the Regions park has been built. Relinqieshment will not be given up.

This is on the city council's agenda for tomorrow:
A Resolution supporting $30 million for the 5-year (2018-2023) capital
budget for Legion Field, a portion of the $100 million Legion Field
Community Redevelopment Project, which will focus on revitalizing the
Smithfield Community by addressing housing, infrastructure
improvements, improving parks/greenspace, as well as quality of life
issues with potential funding partners to include: federal, state, local
agencies and/or authorities, educational institutions, foundations as well as
the private sector. (Submitted and Recommended by Councilor Parker)

I am convinced that a thread started by bamablazerseatcertificate, to which birminghamjosephmycousingotscrewed replies, setting up a never ending feedback loop of nonsensical, illogical, and grammatically disastrous responses, will ultimately lead to full-scale nuclear war on the Korean peninsula, and thereafter ensnare us all in WWIII.

Don't think we will know until we finish the interstate that kinda runs through it.
Not a bad idea for new paint, lighting, and signage. Maybe better paved roads around it. I would give the new mayor time and a chance a lot of moving parts here. It didn't get done under Hell so that's that. Would like to hear what he has planned for uptown, five points west, and five points south/southside, and maybe downtown. I'll wait til he figure out what to do with the big building in ensley before I judge him.
At some point UAB should keep demanding an OCS. Just to keep a conversation about it. A nice 35-40 K masterpiece of the southside. Along with a new bball practice facility. UAB deserves and need both.

We could just wait until March when the city goes bankrupt and let UAB bail them out by buying the Crossplex complex and Bill Harris Arena at 25 cents on the dollar.
