Delaware starts $60 million upgrade-start of FBS move with JMU?
A $60 million upgrade is planned for the Blue Hen stadium. Will this upgrade be enough to go FBS?
delawarefirst.udel.edu/priorities/athletics-facilities/
Have always believed that James Madison really valued their conference mates Delaware and Stony Brook too much for JMU to leave the CAA. Stony Brook has upgrade plans and now Delaware.

Nope....just a FCS school wanting to upgrade their stadium.
Just how the Montanas upgraded and continue to upgrade their stadiums without any intention of FBS.

Delaware and JMU in the MAC makes sense. Those two would not be flight risk.

RE: Delaware starts $60 million upgrade-start of FBS move with JMU?
I'll go out on a limb and say...yeah, Delaware's considering the move now.
There was a viability study in 2007, but, then again, a LOT of schools did studies then and up until 2012 or 2013 when there was a slowdown on all of this stuff. Word was there was another one around that time (maybe 2013?). Yes, they were serious then, but, reactive, of course, to the landscape.
You have to realize that with Delaware, for football, it got by as "Transfer U," picking up "scraps" from FBS. With the proposed changes to transfers, "Transfer U" is getting knocked about some. They can't get by how they once did.
You better believe they're envious of their CAAF brethern who enjoy either A10 or Big East membership for basketball. Even though a quick drive from Philly and the Big Five scene, it's virtually invisible unless a team has tournament aspirations (the women's team a few years ago got some attention).
And that invisibility in the region is a big deal. Villanova's growing. Rutgers is growing. Towson is growing. And, believe it or not, we see URI signage along the PA Turnpike and I-95 near Philly now. Along with Wilmington's post-bac programs, Widener's desperate advertising measures, and the Penn State-creep into the Philly area, Delaware's presence in the region is challenged.
There has been so much speculation about CAA and CAAF over the years because of what it lost AND what it may lose in the future (not just Madison, but Stony Brook, too), along with the Patriot League constantly asking the same three or four schools to join them...
Hey, it's time.

RE: Delaware starts $60 million upgrade-start of FBS move with JMU?
UDel is in a great place in the CAA. It is still predominately a bus league. UDel would not be able to move football to FBS without getting kicked out of the CAA for all sports. UDel is not a good institutional fit for the Patriot, MAAC or NEC. That leaves only America East, where they would be an outliner doubled up with UMBC or the already bloated A-10. In order to move to FBS UDel would have t have a MAC all sports invitation signed and sealed. This is one of the few schools that makes money at FCS. I don't think either UDel or the MAC there is enough money to be made from a move, to justify UDel moving up.
On a seperate note, UDel's stadium is pretty big, but really out of date. It is not ADA compliant. Last time I was there, there were no railings on stadium stairs and nowhere near enough bathrooms. My guess is this fund drive is mainly to upgrade what they have.

I'd LOVE for the Blue Hens to jump up to FBS. They have been a power in FCS for years. They have a great fan base and great tradition in FB. The MAC would be a great spot for them.
After a few years at the FBS level along with JMU in the MAC i'd love to see an eastern G5 level conference form.
North: Del, UMass, Buffalo, Army, ODU, JMU
South: Marshall, App State, Coastal Carolina, Charolette, Georgia Southern, Georgia St

I'd think Army would prefer to remain independent. They could schedule more high-profile opponents that way. So as long as we're in wishful thinking land, maybe trade them for YSU?

I don't think being in a regional conference with other northeastern and mid-Atlantic schools isn't quite the same in FBS as it is in FCS because of the transfer component that allows for some different practices between the levels. Delaware would probably need that FL and TX (or CA) pipeline like other schools crave at the G5 level that it doesn't need presently.
I wish we could get that regional thing going again, and not have to feel like every conference needing some pipeline to a big state. There's a lot to build from in the region that doesn't need to connect to the Gulf.

How about this?
Eastern Athletic Conference

Stony Brook, Albany, Towson, and maybe New Hampshire all could make the move to FBS. They could see how Liberty do for Independent status at FBS, and they all could go Independent, and reform a new G5 conference in the future.
I do think Coastal, Charlotte, and the Georgia twins are too far south for them to go with the northern schools.
UMass.
Buffalo
Stony Brook
Albany
New Hampshire
Towson
Marshall
Appalachian State
James Madison
Delaware
Youngstown State
VCU starts football to join them at the FBS level? Them or ODU for the 12th spot.
That would be better than going all the way down to Georgia.

Yeah, look at all of those high profile opponents! They usually play 2-3 P5 schools a year, a FCS, the other two academies and a bunch of G5 schools.
They left CUSA because they couldn't compete. This is not that CUSA, that conference has Louisville, TCU, Cincy etc.

Yes, I suppose you're right. As long as they can play Navy, I imagine they'll be happy enough.
OK, so for the hypothetical "EAC":
