At the exhibition... Kent State playing with high energy. Walker scoring, Peterson defending. Avery playing point.

RE: Kent State vs Wooster
I like what I saw. De La Rosa looked like a completely different player compared to last year. His hard work in the offseason is showing. It looks like we will get lots of scoring from different personnel. If someone is off one night, I can see someone else being on. BJ Duling is big in person. I didn't realize it. Tough too. The score could definitely have been higher had we not missed so many shots in the second half. We beat a good team who brought it to us tonight. Kudos to Wooster. I'm ready for YSU, our first test with Naz Bohannon and company...

86-65.
Wooster shot the 3 at will (successfully) the first 15 minutes of the game, but had trouble later on when we shut that down. I definitely don't want to see a repeat of teams draining 3's on us again this year. Also, Kent needs to make sure they don't get caught "leaving their feet" so much while contesting perimeter shots. We got burned a few times with that, as well at times last year.

Is Kent playing a closed scrimmage this year in addition to the exhibition game? They've scrimmaged St Bonaventure in recent years.

From what I've heard, ADR played well, but not long due to (usual) foul trouble ... after that the Juco bigs did relatively nothing, Nwankwo only played the final minute ... Pippen played but ???? .... based on that Kent is going to struggle, bigtime, over the course of the season without a solid/consistent inside game/presence.
Still wondering if Nwankwo is hurt ... or worse, has Melvin Tabb returned??

RE: Kent State vs Wooster
Some thoughts. Walker's jumper looked great last night. I think him taking the next step is one of the biggest keys to our season so I was glad to see him play in control and efficient. Avery looked good running the offense and was finishing his drives well. We'll see if those plays are there against teams with shot blockers though. De La Rosa was having his way inside but he had at least 6 inches on everyone. Not sure how much of what he did translates to D1 games. His jump hook looked pure though and he used it a lot. Seems like he's put in time at that. Duling doesn't look like any freshman we've ever had. Built like a house and plays well above the rim. His game will need some polish but man, he's oozing with potential. He's got a pretty slick spin move off the dribble he used a couple times. Pippen looks like he added some muscle. I thought he looked decent when he was in. Fredrick will probably take some time to catch up to D1 speed but didn't look bad. Nwankwo wasn't in long but he's huge, moves well, and has a really long wing span. I hope he sticks it out. If he can be developed he could be a force.

RE: Kent State vs Wooster
I agree there's still questions with the inside game. Based on how much scoring he did in JUCO, I hoped to see scoring from Frederick, but it looked like he wasn't supposed to get the ball. Also - Duling did show some good ball handling on the outside. I think Duling & Pippen have potential, but I don't know if we can expect to see it this year. De La Rosa - he was solid when he was in there, but after he came out after 14 minutes, he looked like he was tired.
I was also somewhat disappointed with Johnson & Ridenour - they both seemed to be forcing things and getting in trouble when they had the ball.
So Walker, Avery, Peterson, De La Rosa looked like they matured a year; I'd expect Zabo, Johnson, and Ridenour to be solid backups; Duling and Pippen might grow to fit the forward position opposite De La Rosa by the time the MAC games start, but give them time to develop. We just need Frederick and Nwankwo to back up De La Rosa and anything extra would be welcome. By my count, we'll just have 11 scholarship players available this year, with transfers Bernstein, Kain Harris, Whittington, and Johnson sitting out a year and Grant a walk on.

Last season Nwankwo had a season-ending injury in January, I'd give him a pass for a few more months to get all the way back
