This is why our CUSA brethren schedule the terrible opponents that they schedule.

Just give it a few weeks. Once conference season starts everyone will marvel at the miraculous improvement of all the CUSA teams...once they start playing each other.

Yep, and when we travel to Rice and North Texas, everyone will be warning about what a tough trip it is going to be.

That is why my optimism is very cautious. Ever since we joined this conference, we always seem to screw it up when we get any momentum. I hope this year is different, but I am guarding against a rollercoaster.

This is pretty typical. Teams lose their OOC schedules, which are weak to begin with, then we beat each other up until our RPI sinks to 22nd in out 32 conferences. Pathetic.

Yup. Might have to do with every team being in their first 5 games and trying to get themselves together. It's a true shame that team sport dynamics can change and performances can get a little better over time.

Or might have to do with the fact that CUSA really does suck, and once conference season starts that is hidden by the fact that there are no crappy teams from other conferences beating us up. When Marshall beats the crap out of the worst teams Texas and Florida have to offer, you all will say, "Look, Marshall sure has gotten better. I don't know why CUSA has these slow starts every year."

And then our lone conference representative in the tournament knocks some really good team off.

Wouldn't it be nice to have multiple teams with the chance to knock off some really good teams?

Yes, we typically do have 1-3 teams that actually ARE pretty good.

Lol. That's true also. But until ODU can win this terrible league that so many over here complain about, I'm not sure that the appropriate conversation shouldn't be that we can't rise above it and might need to move down so we can win the CAA again. I really wish we were winning it like Memphis was and then calling it suck. That would make a lot more sense to me.

And, of course, that set of comments will probably take us to the circular argument about all the damage that Jeff Jones has done to our program. So to the boards, I apologize in advance.

CAA has been a significantly better conference than CUSA in recent years.

And I don't disagree that we should be performing better in CUSA. My personal belief is that CUSA is masking how down we have actually been.

RE: 2017 basketball
I see the stats and RPI of the CAA and CUSA and it just doesn't compute for me. Way too much weight placed at the middle and bottom where no one wants to be. I'm looking for one program over there that could win CUSA and I just don't see it. JMU? Towson? Wilmington? Hofstra? Delaware? Northeastern? C of Charleston?

I look at all 10 teams in that league and try to find the toughness that would stack up well against CUSA's top 4-5 and it just doesn't feel logical to me.

Not saying it definitely isn't true, I just really feel that the top 4 in CUSA would stay at the top and win that league consistently just like ODU, Mason and VCU did. And unfortunately for ODU (as well as our many egos), CUSA has been tougher to win.

I think the extra travel takes its toll. But I've never played, so I could be wrong. Seems easier to drop a game in El Paso than Northeastern. At least all the schools were in the same timezone.

Meh, a 3.5 hour flight vs a 1.5 hour flight. Does it really make that much of a difference?

CUSA sucks as a league but there's enough good teams at the top where winning it all is no guarantee. Still, we should be able to bring home some trophies.

Guess the decision whether to relocate it or not will be made after the powers that be see how much St Thomas rebounds from two hurricanes. The Marriott Frenchman's Reef, HQ hotel for the tournament, was so damaged it will not reopen for two years! That's a big stumbling block...having to use another hotel that would be in good enough shape to handle that many players, coaches, support staff and fans. The Puerto Rico Tip Off Tourney this year was moved to Myrtle Beach. Be nice to go there...at least no expensive overseas flight!

This year’s event was held in that noted tropical party Mecca, Lynchburg.

I guess this could have been a question on a coach's show! Maybe we'll have to save it for the Big Blue Breakfasts later in the year. The 2018 Paradise Jam is supposed to have Eastern Kentucky and UConn as participants.

EKU issued a news release about their involvement in 2015. Talk about providing lots of notice. The only other thing that hints at a 2018 announcement is a Virgin Islands Daily News article from May, but that's behind a paywall.
