Yeah, and that is a perfect example of how coach of the year is nothing but media mess. Just like Pastner was coach of the year in the ACC. If it were legit, coach of the year would be someone like Coach K, Roy Williams, Self, etc. instead they choose someone who takes a really crappy team and makes them just crappy.
Crappy is taking a Texas Tech team, I mean it's Texas Tech, to the tournament with an at large bid? Cool...
Knight quickly improved the program, which had not been to an NCAA tournament since 1996. He led the team to postseason appearances in each of his first four years at the school (three NCAA Championship tournaments and one NIT). After a rough 2006 season, the team improved in 2007, finishing 21–13 and again making it to the NCAA Championship tournament, where it lost to Boston College in the first round. The best performance by the Red Raiders under Knight came in 2005 when they advanced as far as the Sweet Sixteen. In both 2006 and 2007 under Knight, Texas Tech defeated two Top 10-ranked teams in consecutive weeks. During Knight's first six years at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders won 126 games, an average of 21 wins per season.
Pat couldn't handle the job. Then they hired Gillespie and all his personal demons.
lol Personal demons work for free.

Tubby Smith might be a mistake but if we gave Pastner 7 years, I can wait a couple more on Tubby. Once again we ain't talkin about Tubby if Pastner doesn't muck up his last few years, I wish he hadn't but he did. I will bow out now, nobody is changing anyone's minds, can't wait for the season to find out.
There are two seasons that are outliers; 2008 and 2014. They also happen to be the only seasons that Pastner OR Cal did well against ranked teams. Cal only had 2 seasons above .500 against the top 50 of the RPI, 2006 and 2008. The other 7 seasons he was a combined 19-37 record against them, and overall in 9 years he was 43-44 against them.
During Cal's run from 2006-09 he was 30-12 against the top 50 or 71.4%, otherwise he was 13-32 or 28.9%. At Kentucky, with similar teams he is 73-29 against them or 71.6%.
Pastner is 22-44 in his 8 years or 34.4% overall.
The bottom line is that it is very difficult to win games against top 50 and ranked teams when you get very few of them, almost none at home, and almost none at home after Christmas. When Pastner and Cal had similar teams, they performed at a very similar level at Memphis.
What is Tubby lifetime against the RPI top 50?

Are you paying him?
The point is that we could have hired someone much better for a lot less money...the entire point actually. No shock that you can't figure it out.
It may have still cost more here. There is no way to prove that correlation.

Randy Bennett is making $575,000. Brad Underwood made $1 million his only season at Oklahoma State. Steve Prohm is making $2 million.
Cost Per NCAA Tournament Win Since 2008:
Tubby: $21 million
Wade: $2.4 million (coaching since 2014)
Bennett: $1.9 million
Underwood: $1.1 million (coaching since 2014)
Prohm: $1.1 million (coaching since 2012)
It is what it is...
You would have paid more to get them to come here. Also, if you are going to use career stats calculate everything relative to a career not just an arbitrary number that makes YOU look good.

10 years buddy, more than enough of a sample size to know that Tubby is getting outcoached by everyone. Nobody cares what Tubby did in 1998.

He was the anti-Pastner at the time and the boosters have always reacted this way. That was how Pastner got his killer contract in the first place.

Yep, we did it in both football and basketball. We hired a recruiter (Pastner/Porter) who couldn't coach. As soon as we got rid of the recruiters we hired coaches who weren't great recruiters (Fuente/Tubby). Main differences is Fuente is an up and coming coach who is trying to make a name and win big. Tubby is a has been who is trying to help his son land a future job.
I thought the guy was national coach of the year in 2016. Has Saul been interviewing for head coaching positions? I guess I missed that.
