I would say currently when I attempt to watch the lack of scoring is one of the main reasons I usually turn the channel.

I think soccer averages around 3 goals per game. Baseball currently averages around 8 runs per game.

That number for baseball was probably a run or two lower before they decided to lower the mound, that's just my recollection.

Yep, in 1969 the mound was lowered after the "Year of the Pitcher". Bob Gibson' never to be bettered (post "dead ball era") ERA of 1.12 and Denny McClain’s 31 victories saw to the need of lowering the mound to create more offense. Pitching was so dominant that Gibson lost 9 games that year.

As for today's scoring in baseball when a runner reaches second base he is considered in scoring position where a hit usually brings the runner home. While the hit often does not happen (hitters fail to get a hit more then 70% of them on average), it could on any pitch.

That's the biggest misconception of the sport. Only about 8% of matches across all professional leagues in the world ended in 0-0 draws over the last 10 years according to a SkySports study from last summer. I guess I just find it ironic how the vast majority of people who think soccer is boring tend to be baseball fans. Also, far too many fans seem to forget that college football ended in ties until the late 90's, which for those who have a hard time with history is roughly a century of the sport. Carry on.

I stand corrected, thank you. However, a 0-0 score is still a particularly salient example of the futility of ties that occur in soccer that, like college football, should be fixed by soccer organizations.

Ultimately a Draw has become a gigantic part of the game, and has been for as long as its played. You'll never see it changed. At one point MLS tried to get rid of it when they first were created, but it hurt attendance.

I think the biggest mistake you see is the belief that ties hurt soccer. I think you'll find a large percentage of Soccer fans are fine with ties. There are situations in which a tie is not an acceptable result, and situations where it is a perfectly acceptable result.

Lets do keep in mind that overall only between 15-20 percent of games end in ties. Most Soccer Teams play at least 50 games a season, and they'll probably tie between 8-12 of those games. About half of those ties are going to be considered a "good result" by the fan base.

You guys have to understand that the idea of overtime and extra innings/whatever is really foreign to most non Americans. They think the idea that we have to have a winner, and teams could continue playing for hours, in theory, until it happened is absurd.

I believe ties and scarce scoring hurt the game of soccer in America. I think it is the primary reason soccer as a spectator sport has not made more conversions despite the evangelical zeal - tinged with patronization - of soccer enthusiasts.

I readily admit I have no hard evidence backing my opinion, but there has to be reasons - whatever they are - keeping Americans from adopting soccer in greater numbers.

The thing is. Numbers indicate that Americans ARE adopting Soccer. MLS attendance continues to go up every year, European clubs now regularly stage matches inside the US to crowds as large as 100K. South America is wanting to move its Continental tournament to the US on occasion because we'll bring in large crowds.

At the Youth levels, the sport that is larger than it has ever been before, to the point that the Youth system is passing several hardline American sports.

The issue is and remains that Soccer is not popular in the United States within certain groups of people (Specifically People in the deep south, older Americans, and hardline football fans) Those are the fans that complain the most about the sport, and fail to understand why its so popular. Most of those are located in areas, or are old enough they were not exposed to it as kids.

The numbers seem to indicate that eventually the sport will grow more in those areas, but its not there yet.

A 1-0 or 1-1 isn't much better and combined with 0-0, it makes up a distortionate amount of results.

Ease offsides or eliminate. Punish anyone that tries to poach. Problem solved.

MLS is famous for giving tickets away and fudging attendance. Popularity and attendance fudged to keep new franchise pyramid scheme going...

soccer is still weak among college programs and the money for college is still in football and basketball. You will never see that change until there is a way for americas best athletes to get a full ride scholarship in soccer like it is for basketball and football.

white america can keep playing sports like soccer and lacrosse but at the professional level in the united states the best athletes will continue to play in the NFL and NBA and will continue to bring home the ratings.

from coaching high school sports i have come to the realization that every kid(terrible athlete or not) thinks they deserve a chance to be a varsity athlete (work ethic and dedication or not). LAX and Soccer are great for some

Oh I completely agree, I think they should go to the hockey format. That has worked very well for them, and the sports are incredibly similar in many ways already.

The Predators' run to the Stanley Cup turned me into a hockey fan. It is a fast paced and unpredictable sport with masterful and tough athletes. Who would have thought hockey would be the toast of a southern town and the capital of country music?

Ice hockey is a fabulous sport. They could ban fighting tomorrow and I would still watch it because of the power and grace of the game. Those players skate so well, so effortlessly, and combine that with the essentials of the game makes it a marvelous sport. Even though it is low scoring, it is fast paced. Love it.

Downtown Nashville around Bridgestone Arena was jammed with Pred fans during the playoff run. It was quite the party and adds to home ice advantage.

I really wish that soccer wouldn't have infected our country. I've always though of soccer as a 3rd world sport. If you need any more proof that the United States is in decline as a world power... I give you soccer's growth. I believe both are positively correlated.

A rise in something matched with a decline in another would be a negative correlation...guess that's the WSU education you've got there.

I was in that area back in 2012 when the Bearcats played their first two rounds down there for the NCAA tournament and enjoyed the hell out of that environment...I can only imagine what it was like for the Preds.

France, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy... ...none of those are third world countries.

Even Japan, Australia, and SK are also advancing to World Cups. It's the world's game.

RE: OT:Official Soccer Sucks Thread
soccer is like baseball or even tennis...I enjoy playing those sports with friends for fun...I get no pleasure from watching them on TV.

I do like soccer though just because it seems to enrage those on the right side of the political spectrum for no apparent reason.

France, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy... ...none of those are third world countries.

Even Japan, Australia, and SK are also advancing to World Cups. It's the world's game.

They've all been in decline for some time, all due to embracing soccer.

Ya... they should model themselves more on the Caribbean countries that embraced Baseball. It's done wonders for them! /s 07-coffee3

A rise in something matched with a decline in another would be a negative correlation...guess that's the WSU education you've got there.

I understand that. I was attempting to infer that as soccer grows, so does our advancement in the decline. While that could be deemed positively correlated in an informal sense, it wouldn't make mathematical sense on a correlation chart unless I specified a value for America's decline in positive terms as the decline grows larger.

P.S. **** you!
