There is something odd about the gap between revenue and expenses at WVU. Most other schools showing 20million "profit" have much higher budgets overall.
I think a lot of schools have donations go to foundations then the foundation releases only the money needed to the school. That is why so many are nearly identical on revenue/expense.
historically WVU has always been in the black or extremely close to it. I'm assuming the huge bump in revenue comes mostly from TV money. Things are going very well at WVU right now.
Better put some of that money back. The futures looking bleak for The Big 12.
Couldn't happen to a better bunch.

The ACC has been a financial bonanza for UofL. We make more money than every program in The PAC, every program in The Big 12 except Texas and Oklahoma. We would place 8th in The Big 10 and 11th in The SEC.
Not to shabby but we can do better.

If you guys end up "like Jerry's World"----!!!! The home of the Cowboys and a million other events, I'll be amazed. A college football stadium in Louisville that equals one of the most popular venues in the world right now.

Sounds like a question you should ask on a Washington State message board. You can find half a dozen of them by asking Google.
Or, you could just wait for someone on this board who has never been within 1,000 miles of there in his life, and couldn't find the place on a map, to answer your question.
Yeah, I spent the better part of a year in the Seattle area, but I have no idea where Washington State is... Is it near Idaho?
There might be fewer people within 200 miles of Wazzu than any other P5 school, except maybe the other school where Mike Leach was the head football coach.

Field level suites....a design copied from Cowboy Stadium. There will be 10 along what is the now the north end of the stadium in Louisville. They are already soldout as are most of the premium seats in the expansion. The overall design of the end zone was copied from Seattle's Centurylink Field.
Article is a little dated; from August 2015, but quote tells the story....
Jurich said he and his staff have been working on plans to enlarge the stadium for about three years. He said UofL stole some of the design ideas from AT&T Stadium in Dallas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, and Seattle’s CenturyLink Field, where the Seattle Seahawks play.
“The challenge was the end zone part because we wanted to do it great,” Jurich said. “This is really the home for all of our (football) athletes and coaches, so we wanted to make sure we just didn’t throw things up. “So we looked at a lot of places. There’s probably a lot of Seattle in it and a little bit of the Dallas stadium in it.
“There’s going to be a lot of things incorporated (from AT&T Stadium) because they do it right down there, there’s no question about it. The Seattle stadium is spectacular also, so we kind of stole from those two areas.”

If the end result goes like the plan, that would make it one of the best football stadiums in college or the NFL. Super Bowl quality worthy.

Just learned more than I ever wanted to learn about them. Tiny stadium. Tiny town surrounded by nothing. University of Idaho a few miles away. While looking a hundred mile in each direction, google street view looks like a 100 year drought was brought onto the old Windows screensaver grassland.

They have collected a whopping $27,359 in ticket sales the 4 years they have been in the WAC (there were no records kept for 2014-15). But to top that off it has been 5 years since they last received a donation for athletics; $0 in each of the last four years.
Still 2010-11 was their peak year. $56 in tickets and $18 in donations.
SoCalBobcat78 assures however that this is a healthy and well supported D-I program.

It looks like things are going well.
There was a large bump in donations and rights. It looks like WVU thinks these are one-time occurances or they would be spending them. Maybe there was a capital drive and naming rights for a project being built in FY17.
Most athletic departments would have a hard time increasing donations 30% just to show a 20million profit.

I think I might just chip in a dollar so I can say I'm the leading donor for a D1 athletic program.

We all know you make all that money because you bamboozled your city on the bball arena.
[/quote]
You'd be surprised how much money you make when you average over 20,000 per night vs only getting about 10k
Louisville is #3 in bball attendance. 396,333 people attended 19 games. West Virginia was #39 with only 158,750 attending 15 games. You seriously want to question revenue generated? Lol
RE: Newest USA Today College Athletic Spending Spreadsheet
Chicago State's operating budget of 76 million for their entire university is smaller than athletic budgets at 50 Division 1 schools (including UConn).
RE: Newest USA Today College Athletic Spending Spreadsheet
UMass #70 in public universities and tops 40 Million in revenues and expenses despite have two terrible years in all three major revenue sports: football, basketball, and hockey.
Quote:UMass' total athletics revenue for 2016 came in at $42,350,911, and increase of $5,838-474 over their 2015 revenue total. However the athletic department expenses also increased, checking in at $42,792,280 for 2016. That expense number is an increase of $5,894,905 over their 2015 expenses, which registered at $36,897,375.
All told, the UMass athletic department ran a deficit of -$441,369 in the 2016 athletic year.
In 2015 UMass also ran a deficit in the athletic department of -$384,938, however in 2014 the athletic department operated at a surplus of $400,676. The 2016 numbers are commensurate with the range that UMass has traditionally fallen in, both deficit and surplus, since their move up from FCS to FBS in 2011.
2016 is the first year where UMass' revenues and expenses have both come in above $40,000,000.

Never ceases to amaze me how people want to pretend that college athletic departments should be treated like for-profit businesses, simply because it isn't a part of the core education mission.
Neither are the IT operations, which cost major universities tens of millions per year, perhaps if not more than that.

Well, athletics should be run so as to generate more revenue than it spends, so that rather than draining academic funds, it contributes to academics by funding scholarships for non-athletes, helping to build laboratories and libraries, etc.
That actually does happen at some places.

RE: Newest USA Today College Athletic Spending Spreadsheet
Yeah, a couple. Most of the other 1000+ colleges and universities who spend their own money to have an athletic dept are just fine with spending their money to have an athletic dept.
Students demand it, and it creates many benefits, a lot of which can't be quantified.
Your opinion is perfectly valid, but extremely unpopular and won't become anything close to a prevailing viewpoint any time soon. College athletics, "subsidized" as it is, is here to stay.
