Filip, Austin Riddle and Matthew Murray (junior division) are competing at the USA Track and Field Championships this week in Sacramento.
From a brief search, it appears that Scott will need a top 3 finish and 8100 points in order to qualify for this summer's world championships in London. But maybe not - they have some odd rules about qualifying often times. He has the fifth best mark this year among the USA decathletes competing in Sacramento.

Scott will need to score 8100 and to finish among the top 3 in order to make it to London.
Also, two former Owl athletes will be in Sacramento: Chris Pillow (Pole Vault) and Ari Ince (Javelin).

Weather in Sacramento is supposed to be extremely hot. The high today might hit 110 before it cools off the next 3 days to 103, 100 and 97! And the city is under an excessive heat warning until Saturday night. They've adjusted the schedule a bit (but because of TV, most of the weekend action is going to be in the hottest parts of the day), but I certainly wouldn't expect fast times in the distance races. I'm not sure if the weather will help Filip in his quest to break 8000 points either although I guess he might be a little more used to the heat than some of his competitors.

Mike you should keep track of his score like you did for the NCAA's with the graph comparing his score to Texas Relays, CUSA's and NCAA's. It looks like his first two events might not be on a season high pace but it's too far off.
He just needs to show some improvement in the throwing events because those are the events that hurt him at the NCAA's.

I agree. But I didn't have time to set it up when these first events were completed.

12.51 meters (41' 0½") in the shot put. That is not close to a season's best.
During the 3rd event, he has 2483 points (down from 2565 at NCAA). The shot put is continuing for those who have not completed 3 throws, so without improvement, I'd guess he's going to be in around 7th place.

RE: Rice Track & Field - Scott Filip
Scott was 3rd in the long jump (7.53m / 24-8 ½ = 942 points, pushing him up to 4th place overall.
The Top 5, overall, after 2 events:
1 - 1,970 - Devon Williams (Georgia) 7.74m (25-4¾) / 995
2 - 1,913 - Zach Ziemek (adidas) 7.69m (25-2¾) / 982
3 - 1,877 - Trey Hardee (Nike) 7.43m (24-4½) / 918
4 - 1,866 - Scott Filip (Rice): 7.53 (24-8 ½) / 942
5 - 1,819 - Austin Bahner (Shocker TC) 7.41m (24-3¾) / 913
(Now, I'll start working on the comparative formatting. :-) )

After the first round in the Hammer Throw, Austin Riddle is in 10th with a throw of 62.48 meters (205' 0"). Top 8 after 3 throws will advance to finals.

Austin with a slight improvement to 62.63 meters (205' 5"). He remains in 17th place. He won't advance, but a great learning experience.
