Even blue-grey paint would go a long, long way (though maintenance is a bi-atch)
And that hospital... man oh man..

It is what it is, but this photograph is kinder than the first. Best that can be said is that it works, and JMU made the best use of the Cancer Center.
The interior is spacious and very functional for Admissions and The Graduate School.

^ heard the same from my brother... at the pedestrian level, massive improvements in the area (90% of the time people don't look above the 10 foot mark)

Additionally, this space has given JMU lab space for an accelerator that can be used for low-level nuclear physics research, which is pretty cool.

I feel like they could just cover up the brick with blue stone it would make a world of difference.

Not sure it's possible to cover up the brick. The brick itself is likely already a veneer, and to add a bluestone veneer on top might cause issues down the line.
For instance, if there's issues with moisture down the line, they'd have to determine whether the issue is between the bluestone & brick, or brick & structural face. That's a bigger headache than it's worth.
Just guessing though...

That's a good point. I would have to think they considered trying to make it "blend in" better to the Quad architecture, especially with adding the covered walkway and bluestone elements to that.

It's an interior campus building. They did a decent job with the outward facing stuff like the health center and SSC.
(back to Madison Hall though) They put a lot of "curb appeal"/lipstick on that pig though with the bluestone towers and columns in front of the building.

it wouldn't be easy... but you leave airspace between the old and the new... and then allow for relief every 8 veritical feet, and include "weep holes" for moisture. The weight isn't carried by the brick but by proper ledges.
all that said - would be more expensive than putting bluestone on a NEW building....maybe we need to invent bluestone wallpaper? first up is burruss hall...

Anybody notice the rendering for the Union Bank and Trust Center has changed? Seats are closer to the court, especially behind the baskets. Also, the side with "wall" now has an atrium with a bunch of tables where I presume rich people will mill around and drink and not watch the game.

Hey we need a club level in our basketball arena. It's the only way that JMU basketball is watchable.

I am amazed at how close Hotel Madison is to the street. How were they able to get permission to build so close to the street?

Assuming the zoning map on the city's website is up to date, that parcel is, surprisingly, zoned R-3. I don't think the Madison Hotel use is consistent with that zoning. Either the zoning has been changed to reflect the new use, or there was a variance granted to give them the square footage, building envelope, and use they needed.
Looking only at the site plan for the parcel, it's not bad. In context, however, it does come closer to the street than every other building along that stretch of Main Street does. But who knows, that stretch of Main Street may look different years from now.

We're JMU. We do whatever we want. Whenever we want. And, however we want. Harrisonburg...zoning...rules...meh, that's for somebody else.

In the interest of facts, the hotel isn't a JMU project. Obviously there's JMU interest, but it's being built and run privately. The land is owned by JMU and leased to the Hotel, which makes it state property so the zoning stuff may get a little squishy. I would say everything is at 10 feet setbacks for the structure so I think it probably jives, but I'm no zoning expert.
