(03-10-2017 06:07 PM)Nittany_Bearcat Wrote:  The OVC turned down NKU back in late 2011. They needed 9 votes out of 11 and only got 8.

Supposedly, the vote broke with the KY schools (Morehead, Murray, EKU) all being in favor, but all the "no" votes coming from Tennessee-based league members (Belmont was not an OVC member in November 2011). The "no" votes being generally predicated on NKU being a threat to upset the longer-term balance of power in the league (NKU having more $ and resources vs. most schools, and tipping the league more generally toward their north).

I thought that was a short-sighted move then --- and if the day ever comes to pass that Belmont and Murray State move from the OVC to the Horizon (because it's a better league vs. where they are now) --- it will really have been a dumb move.

For those who have wondered if there was proof this actually happened...the president (at the time) of NKU is the one who gave all the details.

So yes, the OVC really did make that decision. I'm WAY happier to see my Norse end up in the Horizon. Much better now and long term. Apparently some of the OVC members saw the writing on the wall. :)

Thanks for providing the link (and confirming my memories).

From a former Fort Thomas, KY resident ........ and from an alum of the only other full D-1 member that has a nickname that starts with the letter "N" ........ NORSE UP!

How fitting they get placed against Kentucky in round one.

Join the bandwagon, there's plenty of room!

Though I think my Norse deserved a 14, it's a nice setup for them. Because, if they lose (even by a large margin), no big deal. It was expected.

At the same time, if they pull off a miracle and WIN...the state of Kentucky won't forget this for the next 100 years.

I'll be there Friday in Indy. I'll be an extremely vocal bandwagoner for the Norse that night. I implore everyone in attendance not a UK fan to do the same!

I'm beginning to believe the conspiracy theories that took UC out of Indy - most UC fans I know have a soft spot for NKU, and it'd give NKU a helluva rooting section against UK. Not that the Norse stand much of a chance, but with a friendly crowd anything can happen.

For those who haven't seen NKU play, enjoy watching Drew McDonald do a little bit of everything, Cole Murray, one of the best 3 point specialists in the country and Lavone Holland, an athletic, scoring point guard who can get to the basket at will.

They are a well coached team who plays tough and doesn't give up on games. They tend to make solid adjustments at the half and have made more than a couple second half comebacks this year.

They are also athletic and deep (they generally play 9 or 10), but sadly, very undersized. I'm not saying they are going beat UK here, but I really do think they have a chance to make this game a lot more interesting than everyone seems to think.

My sentiments exactly. I do not believe it will be your standard 2/15, 40-point blowout, even if it is Kentucky.

UC, XU, Dayton, UK, Louisville, Ohio State, Butler, NKU, Wright State, Miami (all within 100 miles within Greater Cincinnati).

IU, Purdue and Akron just a little further out. We don't get the love that other regions in the country get, but we have some fine basketball region. I've always wanted an early season tournament, but egos have always prevailed and it hasn't happened.

You are absolutely right. Although as a homer, I would say the epicenter is about 100 miles to the southeast. 04-cheers

Using Louisville as the epicenter, within a 200 mile radius of Louisville, you can find UofL, UK, IU, Purdue, Cincinnati, Xavier, Ohio State, Dayton, NKU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and teams who do make the tournament regularly such as Western Kentucky, Murray and Morehead States.

Plus of top ten NCAA tournament markets, you will also find Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville, and Dayton

No matter what the distance, Cincinnati is closer to more quality basketball schools:

50 miles from Louisville: 1 NCAA tourney team (Lousville)
50 miles from Cincinnati: 4 NCAA tourney teams (Cincinnati, Xavier, NKU, Dayton)

100 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier
100 miles from Cincinnati: All those schools plus Dayton, OSU, and Butler

200 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, OSU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Illinois, and Tennessee
200 miles from Cincinnati: The same except swap Notre Dame for Vanderbilt

250 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, OSU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Tennessee, Notre Dame, and St. Louis
250 miles from Cincinnati: The same except swap St. Louis for Michigan, Pitt, West Virginia, and (just barely) Virginia Tech

When we were DII, the Great Lakes Valley Conference always seemed to have top notch basketball. It isn't very old, but SIUE and NKU are the only DI grads from it. UMSL, Southern Indiana, and Bellarmine always seemed to have the potential to foĺlow.

When Northern Kentucky got that new arena built, which is better than most DI arenas not at P5 levels, it seemed to scream that a big time DI program was born.

FWIW, I don't think UMSL will ever move up to DI, they're a commuter school with a relatively mediocre athletic department and only a dozen or so scholarship sports IIRC. Lindenwood in nearby St. Charles will move up to DI if anyone in the St. Louis area does.

This. Lindenwood would be the one to move up. They have struggled at D2 though. The Westplex is almost like its own little metro area.

Have been expecting Lindenwood to move up at least in hockey, where they are now club. But their women's hockey team is DI, and it's the only school other than Syracuse the has a DI women's hockey but not DI men's hockey.

When Lindenwood was NAIA, they won everything, but have really fallen off that pace, as NCAA restrictions are much more limiting. U of Sioux Falls, U of Mary, and Minot St have also experienced this.

It's amazing to read something like this, especially from someone who isn't from the area.

I graduated from NKU in 2006 and the arena was only talked about in whispers. Then it happened and it took some time to get a D1 invite. Then after 3 years of losing and VERY poor coaching, the school made a bold move to bring in a new coach AND got the Horizon invite right around the same time. I feared it would take time to be competitive, with such a big step up.

But now, the sky is the limit. Hopefully they continue to compete year in and year out. Maybe NKU doesn't reach the Wichita State/Gonzaga level of mid-major success, but giving themselves a very good chance to win the Horizon every year and establishing themselves as an upper-tier team in the league would be amazing.

The school is also (FINALLY) getting some local media attention, which could be a HUGE boost to the program. Not to mention finally getting some of the students and alumni more involved. They've been very slowly building attendance since moving to D1. Anyone who isn't from the area may not understand, but there was so little media coverage when they first moved up that, 5 years later, some people around here weren't even aware they were D1.

There is a lot of basketball talent in greater Cincinnati and also a lot of overlooked talent in the state of Kentucky (which is what coach Brannen is going after the most). If they can keep hitting on those guys, they can keep winning.

Would watch out for Oakland, as their have a good team coming back. Saw them late in the Clemson NIT game come back from 20 pts down. It seems the newer Horizon teams like NKU, Oakland, and Valpo are hungrier and have developed good programs.

There are a lot of teams that seem on the way up and not the way down. Youngstown State has talent returning, so does Wright State and Oakland and UIC, just to name a few...not to mention that NKU only loses one key contributor.

Valpo will drop off but Wright St will swipe their spot. Wright St finally has a good coach to package with their really good facilities.

Not sure one good season in the conference validates the invite as a good move. Jury is still out. 07-coffee3
