RE: Predicting CUSA basketball's award winners
I don't think there is a scenario where a single UAB player doesn't make at least one of the teams in something. We have a player in the top 5 in conference for Assists, Blocks, Field Goal %, and Steals. We have the player with the best PER in the conference in Chris Cokley. But who knows, maybe since we split minutes so much no one will make one of the all conference teams.

Cokley will likely make 1st or 2nd team.. Norton and Lee though I could see being left off the 1st and 2nd team.. UAB is this anomaly in a lot of ways. No one really stands out from a statistical standpoint because the Blazers are so deep and play so well together. The Blazers will definitely have some representation on one or both of the All Conference teams but they will also most likely be left out of all the other award categories. Which rarely happens on a squad that has 20 plus wins and the regular season title. The Blazers truly have the definition of a team.

Good points.
In my opinion, Robert Brown should be a first team selection. His stats don't jump out but I don't think stats should be the only way to judge all-conference players. He does so much for UAB in so many ways (big shots, defense, etc.). Don't know if the voters will notice without seeing them play every night. I think there are 3 teams selected so some of those other guys (Cokley, Lee, Norton) should also find a spot. Think it would be wrong if a team that possibly finishes 16-2 in conference and is the outright champion is not well represented.
Do they pick a defensive player of the year? If so, Lee leads in blocked shots (unless Diaz passes him this week). Lee might have a chance to win that award. You also could make a case for Dirk Williams as Sixth Man of the Year.

UAB will have a bunch of kids make all conf. They play so well as a team that it seems no one individual stands out. Gotta love that. Tell you what, if they don't get an NCAA bid even if they lose the league tourney, its a cryin shame. Good club.
La Tech deserves an NIT bid at the minimum. Will they get it?

I'd swap Cokley and Evans on the 1st and 2nd teams. Evans numbers are just too good. Everything else should be spot on other than player of the year. I think Hamilton, Kelly, and Freeman are in a dead heat.

I know we play team ball, but no way does the conference champion end up with zero representation on all-conference teams. I also think Lee has a case for defensive player of the year and Dirk Williams has a case for 6th man of the year.

Joe Uchebo at least deserves 2nd team. 1 of 3 players averaging a double-double and broke the all-time rebounding record for CUSA and made it look easy.

Williams has to be the hands down favorite for 6th man.. don't think this original post even listed a 6th man of the year.. if it did I missed it.

I like that list but I can't help but feel like Freeman is going to get more recognition than just first team honors. I think he's going to get Player of the Year. Evans is a lock for freshmen of the year, though.

I missed that he broke it. If anyone has the actual numbers please share.

He broke the record on 2/25 against UTSA and Jeremy Combs also broke the record:
"Charlotte's Joseph Uchebo and Jeremy Combs of North Texas each passed former All-American Kenyon Martin on the rebounding chart for conference games in just 15 contests. Martin pulled down 186 boards in 16 games during the 1999-2000 season. Uchebo now has 201 rebounds against conference foes, while Combs has tallied 187."

I would replace Cokley with Robert Brown on the first team. I would put Cokley on the second team in place of Lee. Brown is UAB's leading scorer in conference games and has been solid in nearly every area.

Yeah a lot of the UAB guys are basically interchangeable because they've all been so solid. I went with Cokley just because his efficiency numbers are pretty crazy, and I went with Lee because it's hard to overlook his defensive impact (5+ blocks/40).
