RE: Informal internet vote on the U of North Dakota's new nickaname
I'll be sad if it's the Rough Riders.
Rough Riders was my school's nickname (Case Institute of Technology) before we merged with Western Reserve (the Redcats). Post-merger, rather than go with Rough Cats or Red Riders (either of which would have been cool), we became the "Spartans" and even used Michigan State's logo. The whole situation just sort of ticks me off even though I wasn't even alive yet.

RE: Informal internet vote on the U of North Dakota's new nickaname
The winner needs 50%, otherwise the top two go to a runoff.
Sundogs is not the most pleasant name via urban dictionary.
Rough Riders is also a condom brand, so some people don't like it, even those it's a state nickname. Others don't like it because it's also the nickname of a local high school.
Rough Riders is likely the odds on favorite, NoDaks is a favorite among people who want to retain the Sioux nickname, Sundogs seems to be the favorite among PC types, and Fighting Hawks seems to be gaining favor among students.

We do a lot of recruiting there for football and hockey. And send a lot of players to the CFL and NHL. The Ottawa Roughriders folded and were replaced with the Redblacks. Canada doesn't seem so PC, with the Edmonton Eskimos and all.

Several thousand suggestions were reviewed by an appointed nickname committee, including those above. Liked Cavalry myself, but the committee axed it because American Indians would be offended. The five were the ones they chose.

I'll go off the board and say "Bighorns."
I believe it is a wild ram/sheep native to ND?

If Rough Riders wins, fans should have to scream "BULLY!" following every announced first down.
My local high school is considering changing its name from Indians. I'm going to suggest Electromagnetic Pulse. You don't want mess with EMP.

They should keep it fighting Sioux. It is not negative. Dakota is another name for Sioux. If they are forced to change the name even when a Sioux tribe is okay for them to use it? Then, Utah, The Dakota states, towns, Utah need to change their name Utes to something else, Florida State have to change their names from Seminoles to Criminols and so forth.

Our hockey fans take pride in throwing frozen gophers or badgers on the ice when the Sioux score. They don't want condoms thrown on the ice against them.

I prefer The Redskins, Caucasians, or Darkies....
What the hell is wrong with people today? Too many with too much time on their hands using a free speech platform to stifle free thinking and force their narrow minded view of how the world should be on everyone else....
Pardon I got to go find something else to get offended by

One tribe's leadership wouldn't allow a tribal vote on it. The NCAA wanted them to have unanimous support from the Sioux tribes and they don't.
The Trojans all got wiped out, so USC can keep their name.

Utah and Florida St got lucky. Their namesake tribes were agreeable and worked out an agreement with the schools, allowing them to keep their traditional names. I'm sure they're getting paid well, for that.
North Dakota got unlucky. The Sioux peoples are generally one of the most hateful towards the people who stole their lands, in my opinion. Even despite that, one of the two Sioux bands/reservations in the state wanted to work out an agreement. But the other band/reservation, which is mostly in South Dakota but has a small part in North Dakota, viciously fought it and no amount of money would change their minds.

It was the Ojibwa / Chippewa tribes, traditional enemies of the Sioux, who fought hardest to remove the name. Sioux tribes in South Dakota, which has horrible Indian relations, were not at all helpful. The Standing Rock tribe in ND/SD, which you mentioned, would not allow even an advisory vote. The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe which is closest to UND, voted to confirm the Sioux nickname in perpetuity, and even sued the NCAA for discrimination, but the courts ruled they didn't have standing.
The Chippewas and libtards on campuses combined made things happen.

But it was ok for Central Michigan to only have one tribe of Chippewas, out of 17 in the state, to support their name. The NCAA is truly arbitrary and capricious. Never mind the SDSU Aztecs, which is ok because it's not an American based tribe.
Brand didn't like Engelstad and his Sioux logos all over his arena he built, so Brand devised a way to knock Engelstad and UND down a peg.

Florida State does not got an unanimous support from all Seminole tribes. The Florida tribe is okay, but the Oklahoma tribe have been trying to sue the school and NCAA to change their name.
