He has an arm, and he can also run (a la Johnson from FAU). But he's also a bit inconsistent, and calls his own number a bit too much imo, which I'll tack up to first game jitters. All in all, I thought he played a good first outing, and I believe the Offense is in good hands.

RE: Birdsong
the read option looked terrible, you have a NFL quality FB/RB in Johnson, give it to him...then play fake and let Birdsong hit his talented WRs...I hope the QB coach gets through to him to use the exceptional offensive talent at MU, he needs to improve

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. Early in the game I didbt think he looked good, but he played better in the 2nd half.
Like younsaid, he calls his own number too much and he also stares down receivers some, but he's not terrible. He's better than anything my team has *unless our freshman is a hidden gem).

RE: Birdsong
ODU fans don't like Birdsong, cause he came from JMU. Our staff really liked him and went after him hard when he announce he was leaving JMU. He has the tools (strong arm and wheels) to be coached up. One of his bad habits was to telegraph his passes by staring down the receivers, but it seems coaching has helped that issue.

I would say Purdue D top half of our league and MB took us down the field when it counted. 23 for 36 with 2 and 1 for 234 yds his first time out in two yrs. I trust Penny,s judgement a lot.

I thought he looked good. I would run less read option. He is not going to make it through the season if he keeps getting hit like that game in and game out.

agree. The somersault at the goalline shook him up.

This. A lot of this. He was taking a ton of big pops out there. Marshall has too many RBs to have to do silly things like this.

Just as I expected: good, not great.
If Marshall is fine with the "deepest team in the league" but 2-3 conferences losses then terrific.

RE: Birdsong
I thought Birdsong looked pretty good. The only thing I noticed he the must fix , he would lock onto his receiver with his eyes the whole time which will lead to some interceptions. I'd say that's why the late Int happened yesterday.

RE: Birdsong
I thought he actually looked pretty darn good, plus he was under a very big microscope.. #1) He was replacing a 4 year "all everything" starter in Cato, #2) He was playing in one of the biggest statement games in Marshall history... #3) Played in front of a packed house on National TV.. Yeah, I thought he looked good, The game winning drive had Chad Pennington composure written all over it. I would just limit his designed runs for obvious reason.. But we have ourselves a QB!

He's under the same level of scrutiny that Bentley is for ODU. Replacing a NFL qb. Sounds like he's handling the pressure and performed as needed. I missed the game due to life but was anxiously awaiting people's critiques.

Bỉrdsong was much better in the 2nd half. Marshall will be fine as their team is very deep on O.

RE: Birdsong
For a player that hadn't been in a game and under fire since Nov 23 2013 he done pretty well. He looks awkward when he runs, he runs from side to side down the field. But he was effective doing so. He didn't look off his receivers enough in the 1st half but done a much bettr job in the 2nd half. The QB and receivers coaches will correct that.
