RE: UAB dropping football?
If there is anything to this, the actual case would not be that they are dropping football, but rather that it is being taken away from them.
OK, you can argue that with more alumni + locals attendance/support, the program would be less susceptible to state gov't actions, thus by failing to support it, the UAB community is letting it wither on the vine.
As others on here have said, the separation of the 67 or so "big" schools from the rest of the NCAA schools along the dividing line of football revenue could very well lead many states to make harsh choices on the budget priorities of their other public universities. If the new playoff ranking system does indeed lead the big football schools to shrink the pool of what they consider "viable" out-of-conference opponents, a lot of smaller programs will begin to hurt. Some people say it may end up with the big football schools only playing each other, while others believe that they will go the opposite way and not risk an out-of-conference loss. I wish the country would quit worrying so much about who is #1. In some years it is obvious, in others you would need a 10 team playoff.
The big football schools had their BCS cabal for years, so now if they end up needing a certain pool of viable opponents, I hope those schools collude to drive up the compensation they receive for playing the games.

Guys, say what you want about UAB, but they don't deserve to have their program shut down...they shouldn't be some sacrificial lamb to Alabama football.
That bugs me.

UAB dropping football?
Kind of scary if you ask me. Bama can afford all the bells and whistles in Ttown, but nothing in B'ham.

Not surprising UA has been sabotaging the UAB team for years. Remember when they would not allow the school to hire Jimbo Fisher when he was an assistant at LSU.

RE: UAB dropping football?
It's really a crap situation right now. I certainly wouldn't wish the same situation on anyone else. This whole thing is really deeper than just the football program too. You never hear about other FBS programs talking about shutting down their own athletics even though there are 20-30 FBS D1 programs worse off than UAB financially right now (even with the constant undermining by the Board)...because no other program is run by board that is essentially only favorable to a different school. The financial thing is just a disguise.
This crap always pops up when UAB has ANYTHING positive happen in football. I've never seen so many news stories about a school being threatened to lose football by another school. Imagine if UT tried to shut down the Memphis athletic program every year by denying you the right to build anything, blocking coaching hires, threatening to kill the program (destroys recruiting), etc. It's just insane. Lol. Time to drink.

No kidding. It just sucks. I was sad you didn't come with us to the conference formerly known as the Big East. I didn't like leaving you. *shrug*

Certainly not for a lack of trying on their part.

RE: UAB dropping football?
It's a tough situation, no doubt.
With all the conference raids and shuffling that has gone on since 2003, things are really predicated on joining the facilities race and timing. Louisville, USF, and Cincinnati enjoyed good timing in 2003 to rise up to the Big East and escape CUSA. MEMPHIS, UCF, Houston, and SMU did likewise in 2011.
The NCAA has regressed to a "have" or "have not" situation.

Definitely sucks for UAB. I hope they can work it out, but they'll always have that crimson cloud hanging over their heads.

I can think of some so called haves that historically suck and are only considered haves due to their conference affiliation. Some so called haves would have a hard time beating a good high school team (sarcasm). On the same token, there are some so called have nots that would.....well, you get the picture.

Every dime not spent on UAB football can be moved over and spent on UA football.

The better comparison would be UTK trying to shut down UTM or UTC football.

RE: UAB dropping football?
I believe something like this happened in Nebraska. They were playing football at Nebraska-Omaha...or something like that, the program was getting some traction, then Lincoln had it shut down.
I could be off on the details in Nebraska but but something like that happened.
